Description

WALL TO FLOOR SEAL
The invention relates to the sealing of gaps between the floor and wall in a room. More particularly but not exclusively it relates to sealing of the gap between the floor and skirting board with a view to preventing draught induced soiling at the perimeter of a fitted carpet. While the invention is applicable to the fitting of any carpet in any room of a domestic or multi-purpose building it is seen to particularly good advantage in the case of carpets of lighter colours especially on floors composed of wooden floorboards.
Especially In a room having a suspended wooden floor, a draught of air tends to invade | the room through the gap present between the floor and the skirting board at the I junction of the floor and wall. If the room has a fitted carpet, the draught is restricted but not avoided. As a consequence, dust particles present in the air may filter up through the edge of the carpet and produce a visible dirt mark. Vacuum cleaning may ë not remove the mark. Indeed, regular vacuum cleaning may exacerbate the problem by drawing more and more air from up through the edge of the carpet and hence increase the amount of dust filtered into the carpet. ..
:.:::e Patent no. GB 2299938 (corresponding to Patent no. US 5930973) discloses a flexible. . gasket for preventing dirt being filtered into the edge of a carpet. The gasket is located ...
between the floor and wall of a room and is of L-shape in section comprising a base limb to be connected (e.g. by adhesive) to the floor and a vertical limb connected (e.g. by adhesive) to the skirting board The vertical limb may be 5 cm high. The gasket can be of polyethylene and supplied in roll form with a pre-creased bend. The vertical limb can be trimmed after fitting. The vertical limb is applied against the visible, front surface of the skirting board.
Whilst this gasket is useful and effective, the present invention has the object of providing a development of improved utility and convenience in installation.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a gasket for use in a room having a skirting board between the floor and a wall of the room, the gasket being made of flexible sheet material and taking up a generally L-shaped section with a base limb on said floor and a vertical limb extending up behind the skirting board.
Preferably, said vertical limb is between five and fifteen centimetres tall.
The gasket may be formed of polyethylene. Also, it may be formed of opaque material.
Advantageously, the base limb has an area sufficiently large to be anchored by carpet gripper rods. : :.
The base limb may be perforated. . According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a length of skirting ..
board for installation in a room adjacent the floor and wall of the room, the rear face of the skirting board having a strip of flexible material attached thereto so that an edge . portion of the strip extends away from the lower edge of the board and is able, when the board is installed, to extend out from beneath the board for underlying the edge of floor covering, e.g. a fitted carpet.
Preferably, the strip is attached to the rear of the skirting board by adhesive.
Preferably, the width of the strip is such that, when the board is installed in the room, the strip extends out from the skirting board by a distance in the range from five to twenty centmetres or in the range from ten to fifteen centimetres.
Preferably, the dimension in the direction perpendicular to the length of the board of the portion of the strip which lies against the back of the board is In the range from four cenDmetres to two thirds of the skirting board height.
Preferably, said strip is made of sheet plastics material, for example polyethylene.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a gasket when located in a room between the floor and a wall of the room, a skirting board being installed in the room, and the gasket being made of flexible sheet material and being generally L shaped with a base limb extending along the floor for underlying a floor covering, e.g. a .
fitted carpet and a vertical limb extending up behind the skirting board. According to a fourth aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of sealing a.: room against ingress of dust, the method comprising applying a gasket as described. . above with its vertical limb behind said skirting board and its base limb extending out. . . from the skirting board and adjacent to the floor for underlying a carpet if fitted in the room.
According to a fifth aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of sealing at the junction of a wall comprising attaching a folded selfadhesive strip to the wall and allowing the strip to unfold for the unfolded portion to lie on the floor and extend out from the wall, and then installing a length of skirting board against the wall.
In order that the invention may be well understood it will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 Is a perspective view of part of a length of skirting board with a pre-fixed gasket formed of a strip of flexible plastics material; Figure 2 corresponds to Figure 1 but with an end portion of the length removed to reveal a portion of the gasket and installed in a room; and Figure 3 is an end view corresponding to Figure 2 showing an edge of a fitted carpet.
Figure 1 shows a length of skirting board 1 to which, right along the length of the board, there is fixed a strip of flexible sheet plastics material 2, for example of polyethylene.
The skirting board may be ten to fifteen centimetres wide, twelve and one half ..
centimetres in the illustrated case, and the width WV of the portion 3 of the strip 2 behind the skirting board may be in the range four centimetres to two thirds of the skirting board height. In the illustrated case, the width WV is seven and one half . .
centimetres. ::::.
An edge portion 4 of the strip 2 extends down from the board 1. This portion 3 may ...
have a width WB in the range from five to twenty centimetres or in the range from ten to fifteen centimetres plus the thickness T of the board. In the illustrated case, WB is about twelve and a half centimetres. The strip is fixed to the back of the board by adhesive. Alternatively it could be fixed by staples.
The board and strip as shown In Figure 1 could be supplied ready-made for installation in a house or like building, or the strip could be applied to the board by the user.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the board and strip are installed in a room with the strip portion 3 behind the board and the portion 4 extending out beneath the skirting board 1 over the floor 5 and into the room. Skirting board 1 is then fixed to the wall 6 of the room by any suitable method, for example nailing. Floor 5 could be a suspended floor formed of wooden floor boards or sheets.
Then, or at a later date, the room floor covering is installed. For example, as shown in figure 3 a carpet 7 may be fitted. The edge of the carpet 7 is fixed on a carpet gripper fixing strip 8 (a strip with upwardly extending tacks). Reference 9 shows a foam underlay for the carpet.
The gripper strip 8 is fixed on top of the portion 4 of the flexible strip 2. The strip 2 forms a gasket that seals the gap beneath the skirting board and helps to prevent dust laden air filtering up through the edge of the carpet. .... :.
The floor covering need not be carpet. Instead it could be linoleum, vinyl, wooden or simulated wood flooring strips or the like. The method of fixing to the floor is adapted; to suit, for example linoleum could be fixed to the floor through the strip portion 4.
Although the dust mark problem may not be relevant, it is often still important to seal.. .
the gap beneath the skirting board, e.g. to reduce draughts.
As supplied, the strip 2 could be folded lengthwise to form the portions 3 and 4 The portion 3 could then be fixed to the wall by adhesive, e.g. by a self-adhesive strip, and the portion 4 then allowed to unfold so as to lie adjacent to the floor. The skirting board is then installed over the portion 3 with portion 4 extending out from the skirting board.
With some hard flooring materials, e.g. parquet or decorative strips, the flooring material is fitted before the skirting board. Then the flooring is laid after the strip 2 is fitted in place so that it lies over portion 4 and then the skirting board is fitted. e-e. .- .. . ..
