Abstract

The invention relates to an improved method of communication to a rider or driver of a track or road racing vehicle that an incident has occurred and urgent action must be taken. There may be one or more transmitters which send signals to receivers mounted in the competing machines and the driver or rider is warned via a visual or audible indicator. The transmitters and receivers may be arranged in conjunction with onboard transponders to allow warnings appropriate to the sector of the track which they are in.

Description

2404061 Motor Racing Signal The invention relates to an improved method of
communication to a rider or driver of a track or road racing vehicle that an incident (e.g. oil on track or an accident) has occurred & urgent action must be taken.
The existing method of marshals with flags or fixed track lights is slow & relies on the rider observing interspaced flags in the heat of a race. Not taking or delay in taking action when an incident has occurred can cause injury or loss of life.
This invention allows instant, clear communication to all or a selection of the riders/drivers and the marshals that an incident has occurred & action (caution, a slowing of pace or stopping) needs to be taken to avoid a possible accident.
The invention in essence in its simplest form consists of a transmitter capable of sending a signal to a receiver in the vehicles in competition which in turn provides a warning (either visual or audible) to the driver/rider and the marshals of an incident.
Thus providing a fast clear warning allowing the driver/rider and marshals to take the appropriate action quickly. The signal could for example could be a lamp which if flashed could correspond to the yellow warning flags or steady to the red race stopped flag.
The transmitter would typically be under the control of the clerk of the course and all riders would be informed at once that there was a need for caution or the race was being stopped but in situations such as the Isle of Man where a large track is used it may be more prudent to use multiple transmitters and or receivers capable of signalling the riders/drivers appropriately for the sector of the track they are on.
One possible mischievous misuse of such a device could for someone to obtain a duplicate transmitter & send spurious & misleading signals to the competitors. This could be overcome by the use of a digital transmission/receiver system incorporating a suitable encryption system.
One embodiment of the invention could be as shown in fig 1-4 Figl Shows front view of the transmitter Fig 2 Shows front view of the mobile receiver Fig 3 Shows front view of the static receiver Fig 4 Shows an example of the race track/course with transmitters & receivers in typical use As shown in figure 1: The transmitter comprises of a shock resistant body (1) an internal or external power source (2) The main control button with accidental usage cover (3) Transmitter Aerial (4) Visual Activation light (5) Audible signal a: As shown in figure 2: - The mobile receiver comprising a shock resistant body (7) An external charge point (8) An encapsulated power source (9) Visual signal {remote or fixed} Receiver aerial (11) & a battery charge indicator (e.g. a led) As shown in figures: -The fixed receiver comprising of a body (12) An internal or external power source (13) Audible signal (14) Aerial ( 5) Visual activation light (16) As shown in figure 4: -The track/course (17) Moving vehicles (18) Carrying a receiver (7) Receive a coded digital message from main transmitter (1) Also marshal receivers (12) receive a coded digital message from main transmitter (1) at the same time as moving vehicles (18) thus conveying a given situation to all concerned.
Other possible modifications & applications will be readily apparent to the appropriately skilled person.
