Abstract

240,365. Haupt, E. H. March 2, 1925. Slipping of wheels, preventing.-An anti-skid device for motor vehicles comprises anti-friction members such as star-wheels mounted upon vertically swinging arms whereby they may be engaged with the track, the track-engaging members adjacent the front wheels being connected with the steering mechanism so that they are turned with the front wheels. Brackets 4, 5 secured to the front and rear axles 2 support short angles 7, to which are secured arms 8, 9, 11, 11<1>, the arms 8, 9 carrying star-wheels 10 or other suitable ground-engaging members, and the arms 11, 11<1> being connected by a rod 12 which is fixed by a spacing block 30 to a rod 29 and link 28 connected to the hand-lever 26. The rod 29 is provided with notches 31, Fig. 5, adapted for engagement with a catch 33 sliding in a housing 35 and serving to hold the arms 8, 9 in the inoperative position. The catch can be disengaged to permit the arms to swing downwardly by a pedal 27 and connections 40, 38. The starwheels 10 are spring-mounted on the arms 8, 9 to allow for unevenness in the track, and the fork 13 of each of the star-wheels adjacent the front road wheels is connected to a link 22 arranged to slide in a sleeve 23 carried by a collar 24 secured to the steering-rod 25 whereby the star-wheels are turned with the road wheels.
