Abstract

Method for extending the shelf life of harvested plant matter such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers, based on applying, by a dipping or spraying procedure, onto the harvested plant matter, an effective amount of a composition being a solution or suspension featuring an ascorbic acid derivative, 6-O-?-D-galactopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid (L-ascorbic acid galactose), or, L-ascorbic acid-6-palmitate. L-ascorbic acid galactose, in concentrations of 0.1 - 75 mM, dissolved or suspended in water, an alcohol, and/or a glycol, is active and effective as a sole antioxidation active ingredient, whereas (i) ?-tocopherol, (ii) ascorbic acid, and (iii) L-ascorbic acid-6-palmitate, each in concentrations of 0.1 - 50 mM, dissolved or suspended in an alcohol/water solution, are active and effective as a synergistic combination of antioxidation active ingredients. Dipping or spraying procedures are performed at room temperature, for between thirty minutes and two hours, or, between three and ten seconds, respectively.
