Abstract

A device for detecting trace substances in a fluid, comprising a container 2 having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. First and second electrically conductive plates 5 are provided and a plurality of electrically conductive spheres 3 (that may be coated with a conductive but inert material for example gold). A biassing means 4 (for example a spring), loads said spheres 3 between said plates 5 forming an electrically conductive path. In use said plates are connected to a bridge measuring device 6 to measure the variance of resistance when a fluid is introduced into the container 2 containing the trace material. The conductivity will vary at the molecular sized interstices between the spheres 3. The electrically conductive plates 5 may be gas permeable. The device may be used to measure the output of a fractional column in a gas chromatography system.

Description

Description
Shown is a detector of trace substances which is used in a gas chromatography unit.
The detector itself is shown in Fig I. & consists of a non conductive body (2) containing small metal spheres plated with a chemically inert but electrically conductive metal (e.g. gold) (3.) The metal spheres (3) are maintained in a constant state of compression by a spring (4) at one end of the body (2.) Two gas permeable sieve type plates(5) (gold plated) in intimate contact with the spheres (3) are connected externally to an electrical bridge capable of measuring the total resistance between the sieve plates (5.) The volatile chemical constituents under examination are conveyed through the normal heated tractional column 'B' (Fig. 2.) By the use of an inert carrier gas thence thro' the detector 'C'.
Injection of the chemicals is via injection system 'A' Recording ofthe chemical 'signature' ofthe injected materials is via a trace recording machine d' in the usual manner. (Fig.2.) The spaces between the metal spheres which are assumed to be 20-30 molecules thick at the various points of contact, constitute an electrical resistance which will vary in accord with the characteristic conductivity of the intervening intersticial substance.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. A device for detecting trace substances in a fluid, comprising
a container having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet located opposite to one another, first and second electrically conductive plates located opposite to one another, a quantity of electrically conductive spheres of a predetermined diameter enclosed within the container and located between the first and second electrically conductive plates, the first and second electrically conductive plates being sufficiently biased towards one another so as to provide an electrically conductive path enabling the combined electrical resistance of the electrically conductive path provided by the electrically conductive spheres and any fluid contained within the container to be measured in use by a electrical resistance measuring means connected between the first and second electrically conductive plates.
  2. 2. A device for detecting trace substances in a fluid as claimed in claim 1, where the electrically conductive spheres are coated with a chemically inert electrically conductive material.
  3. 3. A device for detecting trace substances in a fluid as claimed in any previous claim, where the first and second electrically conductive plates are gas permeable and located adjacent the fluid inlet and fluid outlet respectively.
