Abstract

A low voltage power source comprises a wind turbine 1 or a photovoltaic cell 2, or a combination of both, which charge a battery pack 3. The battery pack will in turn power an electric motor 5 which will drive a hydraulic pump 6 which charges an accumulator or pressure reservoir. The stored energy will be used to operate a hydraulic ram10 which operates a machine to clean the filter screen 14 in a combined sewer overflow system 13. The system controls 11 will incorporate an alarm system with the facility to report faults and access controls through the medium of a cellular phone.

Description

Background of the invention:
In the waste water treatment industry there is a requirement to screen undesirable solids from effluent. The manufactured screens used for this are of a static or dynamic type. The dynamic type has a cleaning system usually powered by mains electricity. The varied and often isolated locations of these sites can mean a ste-specific electricity supply has to be provided, often at great expense. There is always a Health and Safety risk when electricity is brought close to water. This invention is primarily designed to reheve the need for a specific electricity supply as well as removing a serious Health and Safety risk.
There are other applications to which this invention can be applied.
Description of the invention:
2 The present invention describes an apparatus for powering a mechanical device 3 to clean a screen (14) in a Combined Sewer Overflow (13) in a remote location 4 where the use of mains electricity could be expensive to provide and/or hazardous to use. In one embodiment, a wind turbine (1) is coupled with a 6 photovoltaic cell (2) to provide the energy to charge a bank of batteries (3) 7 through a voltage regulator (4). The batteries are sized to run a 0.5kw electric 8 motor (5), or similar, for approximately twelve hours or longer. This electric 9 motor drives a pump (6) which forces hydraulic oil from an associated reservoir (7) into an accumulator (8). The accumulator may be paired to provide an 11 overlapping continuous supply of hydraulic oil at pressure, or one accumulator 12 may be fitted with a one-way valve to allow it to be simultaneously topped up 13 whilst expending energy. When triggered, the accumulator will allow a release 14 of hydraulic oil to pass through a valve system and along a suitable pipe (9) to operate a stroke of a hydraulic ram ( l 0), or similar, to which is attached the 16 cleaning device or other device. The valve system will allow a second pipe to 17 return the oil to the reservoir on this stroke. The valve system will allow the 18 flow to change between the two pipes in order that a return stroke of the 19 hydraulic ram, or similar, can be achieved. The release of hydraulic oil from the accumulator may be triggered on demand, or in another instance manually, or in 21 another instance by instruction via a program command from a computer. The 22 controls (11) will incorporate an SMS enabled alarm system (12) with the 23 facility to report faults as they happen, to provide the status of certain items 24 when interrogated by means of a mobile phone handset and to permit the alteration of settings of the machine by a similar remote method.

Claims (6)

  1. Claims: 1) A power pack apparatus which will give a constant low voltage
electrical supply for use in powering a machine in a remote location where a mains electric supply does not exist, or is expensive to provide, or is hazardous to use due to the machine's proximity to water.
  2. 2) An apparatus as claimed m Claim I which comprises a battery pack which is charged via a regulator using a wind turbine, or photovoltaic cell, or both coupled together to take the best advantage of local weather conditions.
  3. 3) An apparatus as claimed in Claims l and 2 which uses a low voltage electric motor to drive a pump which will force hydraulic oil from a reservoir or similar into an accumulator.
  4. 4) An apparatus as claimed m Claims 1,2 and 3 where the energy stored m the accumulator is released via a valve system to work a hydraulic ram which in turn will operate a machine.
  5. 5) An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim which has a control box linked to a telemetry system which can be accessed remotely to alter settings or respond to alarms via a cell phone or similar.
  6. 6) An apparatus substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
