Abstract
A cylinder insert 10 comprises a main cylindrical body 12 designed to fit within the cylindrical housing of a conventional rim cylinder barrel lock. A thumb knob 14 projects from the insert and is linked to the bolt or latch of the cylinder lock. Rotation of the thumb knob 14 is normally prevented by an electro-magnetic control mechanism which requires either a programmed sequence of button pushes to be input via a keypad 48 or biometric sensor information. A clutch mechanism is provided to protect the control mechanism.
Description
Locks and Inserts Therefor This invention relates to locks and inserts
therefor, and, in particular, not exclusively, to cylinder locks and cylinder inserts therefor.
Traditional rim cylinder barrel locks are the most commonly used door lock but suffer from various disadvantages. Often there may be several different keyholders and the loss by any one of them means that the cylinder needs to be changed and replacement keys provided, all at considerable expense. Likewise, if a key is broken or becomes worn a similar replacement is necessary. There are also circumstances where it is desirable to change the lock on a property to prevent access by an existing keyholder. There are also inconveniences associated with key operated locks; where there are many people requiring access, a corresponding large number of keys is required, quite apart from the risk of loss mentioned above.
Accordingly in one aspect this invention provides a cylinder insert for a cylinder lock of the type comprising a housing for attachment to a structure and including a bolt or latch moveable between an open and a closed position, said cylinder insert comprising: a cylinder body for being secured in use in the housing of a cylinder lock; input means for receiving unlocking information; a drive element associated with said cylinder body for being moved to transmit drive to cause said bolt or latch to move between its open and its closed positions, and : À. À. À Àe be: À.. . À.. À . electro-magnetic or hydraulic control means responsive to said input means selectively to permit or inhibit movement of said drive element in accordance with said unlocking information.
The input means may conveniently comprise a keypad or the like to allow a user to input a sequence of operations. The input means may comprise switches operated by externally accessible separate buttons or it may comprise a membrane keypad arrangement, however other arrangements may be used such as biometric sensors such as fingerprint readers and so on.
This arrangement obviates the need for a separate mechanical key, thereby avoiding or reducing some of the disadvantages associated with conventional cylinder locks. In addition, speed and ease of access for authorised users may be greatly improved without the problem of having to locate and insert the correct key, which can be exacerbated in poor lighting conditions.
In one arrangement, the control means is electrically powered and responds to a predetermined sequence of button pushes. The sequence may consist of a run of button pushes in which each button is pushed once, or a more complex sequence involving one or more buttons being pushed more than once.
In a preferred arrangement, the control means comprises an integrated circuit mounted within said cylinder body. The control means preferably further comprises an electro-magnetic actuator for moving a locking element between a locked position in which it prevents movement of said drive element, and a release position in which said drive element is free to move. The electro magnetic actuator may comprise a solenoid or it may comprise an electric motor with a suitable transmission arrangement.
: Àe Àe À À. be: À. À À.. À . À! À À Preferably, said drive element is rotatably mounted within said cylinder body and includes an externally accessible knob or protrusion which may be fumed by hand by a user. Preferably said drive element includes a torque resisting clutch arrangement to limit the amount of torque that may be transmitted through the drive element. The clutch arrangement may comprise a first part having a cylindrical portion received within a cylindrical bore of a second part with there being a sprung-loaded detent mechanism between the two which yields to allow relative rotation if the torque exceeds a preset amount.
Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of the features set out above or in the following
description.
The invention may be perfommed in various ways and an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a cylinder insert in accordance with an embodiment of this invention; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the cylinder insert of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a central section view through the cylinder insert of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a front view of the cylinder insert of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a rear view on the cylinder insert of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a rear view of the cylinder insert of Figure 1 but with the rear cover removed, showing the locking mechanism in a 'open' position; Figure 7 is a rear view on the embodiment of Figure 1, showing the components in an 'locked' position; e À À À À À Figures 8(a) and (b) are section views through the clutch assembly incorporated in the embodiment of cylindrical insert of Figure 1, showing the components in a normal configuration and an over-torqued configuration respectively, and Figure 9 is a view of a battery pack.
Referring to the Figures, the cylinder insert 10 comprises a main cylindrical body 12 designed to fit within the cylindrical housing of a conventional rim cylinder barrel lock. Projecting externally of the front of the cylindrical body is a thumb knob 14 which is coupled via a twopart clutch assembly 16 to a drive strip 18 which cooperates with the components within the conventional lock (not shown) such that, when the thumb knob 14 is free to tom, it may be used to release the bolt or latch of the cylinder lock. Referring particularly to Figures 3 and 8, the clutch comprises a first part 16' having a cylindrical end which is journalled within a cylindrical bore provided in a second part 16", to which the drive strip 18 is attached. Referring to Figure 8(a) and (b) the inner cylindrical wall of the second part 16" includes two hemispherical recesses 20 into which respective ball bearings 22 are urged by respective compression springs 24 such that the clutch assembly 16 is capable of transmitting normal torque loads but if an attempt is made to force the lock when shut, the first part 16' can rotate relative to the second part 16".
The second part 16" has a segment channel 26 formed therein which cooperates with a locking member 28 which is urged by a pair of compression springs 30 into engagement with the segment channel, normally to lock the clutch against rotation. A solenoid arrangement 32, driving a locking pin 34 À e ee.
À À À À À À. À À. À e À À À À À , , . _ transversely of the locking member 28 is provided, the pin cooperating with a bore 36 in the locking member and being urged into engagement therewith by a compression spring 38. The solenoid 32 is controlled by a control circuit 40 located in a compartment towards the front of the device, and the circuit 40 is powered by a battery pack 42 (Figure 9) which may be conveniently connected to the circuit by a suitable connector 44 and a flexible ribbon lead 46, to allow current to be fed to and from the circuit from the battery pack. The control circuit receives input from a keypad comprising, in this example, five push buttons 48 with associated electrical contacts.
In use, the circuit is programmed to respond to a predetermined sequence of button pushes and to activate the solenoid for predetermined interval if the correct sequence is keyed in.
Various programming options are available, but in this example there are five buttons e.g. marked 1-5. The control circuit may be programmed to accept a four or a five digit code to open the lock. In this arrangement the same button may be pushed more than once so codes such as 2242 or 1314 are possible.
Thus with four button pushes there are 54 possible codes, and with five button pushes there are 55 possible codes. The control circuit is also configured to allow the current code to be changed to allow the user entering the current code twice, then entering 1 2 3 4 5, and then entering the new code twice. The control circuit also operates an LED or other suitable indicator to signal operation.
On actuation of the solenoid, the pin 34 is withdrawn from the bore 36 in the locking member 28, against the blase of the compression spring 38 so that the locking member 28 is free to be slid out of the way when the knob 14 us À À À À .-e À À À À À À. À À À À. À À À . À À À. À À À turned. The knob 14 may then be fumed to withdraw the latch or bolt of the cylinder lock. On release of the knob 14, it returns to the starting position under the effect of the cylinder lock mechanism, and the locking member 28 is then free to move back into engagement with the segment channel 26 under the influence of compression springs 30. Likewise, with the solenoid no longer being actuated, the locking pin 34 seats in the bore 36 under the influence of the compression spring 38.
If an attempt is made to overcome the locking arrangement by force, then the clutch 16 will release so that the first part 16 merely twists within the second part, which remains stationary.
