Abstract

240,227. Godsave, G. E., and Alexander, G. H. June 25, 1924. Mariners' compasses.-The bowl 1 of a compass particularly intended for use on aircraft is provided with a domed window 2 which is substantially less than a hemisphere and has concave inner and convex outer surfaces, for the purpose of enabling the card to be read from any view point level with the bowl. The surfaces of the window 2 are parts of concentric spheres, their centre preferably lying at the centre of a spherical bowl or on the axis of a cylindrical bowl; the thickness of the glass is from to ¢ inch. The window has a flat base which is secured below a bezel 3. The diameter of the base of the window is 4 or 5 times the height of the window above the base, and the card or scale is approximately midway between the centre of curvature of the window and its highest point. The whole of the space beneath the window is filled with liquid.
