Abstract
A communications system for transmitting data to a mobile device comprises a first communications link 16 for broadcasting first, general information and a second communications link, 12, eg a cellular link, over which user-specific data is transmitted.
Description
MOBILE DATA COMMUNICATIONS
The present invention relates to apparatus and a method for efficiently providing data communication to a mobile device.
Currently, it is bcconing increasingly possible to utilise mobile telephones for receiving additional data. In Europe utilising the GSM system of cellular telephone communication, it is currently possible to have data transmitted via the cellular network to a mobile telephone using the GPRS system of connnunication.
This type ol communication permits the user of a mobile telephone to interact with 1() web based services over the internet but there are difficulties with this procedure.
Firstly, communication between the mobile telephone and the cellular network tends to be slow due to the reduced bandwidth available and while the third generation of mobile phones increases this bandwidth this does not totally solve the problem. Secondly, the cost to mobile phone users of down loading any significant amount of data by GPRS or 3G data channel rapidly becomes beyond the leach of most users, thus limiting the acceptance of any content-rich data services.
It is already known that any web services which are provided to mobile telephone users have to be specially prepared for this purpose in view of the restricted display available and also in an attempt to reduce the time for downloading the web content to the telephone.
It is an object of the present invention to utilise two separate communication links to a mobile communications device with one link based on the conventional cellular communications network and the other}ink utilising a broadcast service.
In order that the present invention be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig I shows an overall system diagram of an arrangement according to the present invention; and Fig 2 shows a block diagram of the apparatus required in order to carry out the present invention.
The present embodiment proposes that when the user of a mobile communications device 10 such as a mobile phone, PDA or the like wishes to 1() receive data from a provider 11 of such data, he will initially utilise the existing cellular network indicated generally which in Europe Will require him to utilise Gl'RS or 3G data services in order to access the provider.
Once the provider 11 receives the request from the specific user, he can send an acknowledgement to the user and also transmit via the cellular network user specit'ic information. Separately, and if appropriate independently of any user request, the provider 11 can arrange to have data 14, which will be common to a number of users, generally broadcast using any convenient medium but in this case using a digital audio broadcast, indicated by the reference numeral 16.
As shown in Fig 2, the preferred embodiment of the present invention requires the mobile communications device I () to have two separate receivers, one receiver 21 t'or receiving data via a conventional cellular telephone network and another receiver 22 t'or receiving broadcast information which in this case is a digital audio broadcast. With the advent of digital audio broadcasting, it has become possible to transmit data to radio receivers in much the same way as data is transmitted in a broadcast television signal to the extent that while receiving audio programming a user, in the background also receiving data which can be downloaded, as desired in t-'his receiver where it can be stored.
Consequently part of the user specific information transmitted via the cellular network 11 to the specific user will include information relating to the location in the digital audio broadcast ol' the common information and automatically cause the communications device 10 to download this information and store it in a data store 24 in the communications device.
It will be appreciated that the mobile communications device has a standard mobile phone-based browser such as a WAP browser or iMode program 26 associated with the Gl'llS system provided with the communications device. This program 26 is arranged to receive information via the cellular network and store it 1() for manipulation in the communications device. In the present embodiment we propose to arrange that the int'ormation downloaded from the broadcast channel be stored in the sang location as is utilised by the browser program. It is alternatively possible to utilise a separate storage location and simply modify the program 26 to look at the other storage location t'or basic general data to be utilised with the user specific data via the cellular network.
At the provider location 11 a transmitter/receiver device 31 receives a request from a user via the cellular system and activates a processor 32 which generates two sets of data one set being user-specific and which is sent to the user via the device 31 and the cellular network while the other set is common data 2() which is sent in some convenient fashion to a digital audio broadcaster for general transmission. As mentioned above this common data can be sent to the broadcaster in advance of' any specific user request and be continuously broadcast. For convenience the user-specific int'ormation will include data allowing the mobile communication device I () to download and store the appropriate common inl'ormation which is being broadcast. I'referably this is done automatically by the device I () and so the user is unaware that this is happening.
There are a number of advantages to the above described arrangement.
Firstly, in initially requesting access to a data service provider, the initial set up of the display 28 on the communications device will occur much more rapidly in view of the fact that the bulk of such initial displays is common to all users and consequently will be received by the communications device via the digital audio broadcast medium which is wide band and so will be received by the mobile communications device in a very short time as compared with a cellular communications network. Further since only user specific data is required to be transmitted via the cellular network, this can also be received in a relatively short () time despite the relatively narrow bandwidth of the cellular network.
A data service provider could be connected to one or both services either permanently or on a call-up basis, thus allowing operators to choose at any time which service they wish to send common data down. Thus, if there was a service which a data service provider knew was going to be very popular e.g. the goals loom an important soccer match, this data would be broadcast but a user would only be aware of requesting the service via the cellular network and not be aware that the data had actually been broadcast. In this way, a service provider would overcome problems due to high demand for particular services which might otherwise swamp his existing equipment. | s
