Description

Brandine Device The present invention relates to a method and device for
application of a brand-owner's logo or trade-mark to a foodstuff or beverage, particularly the froth of a cappuccino coffee.
In recent years there has been a significant change in the way food and beverages are sold and consumed. The catering industry has seen a move from a relatively large number of independent cafes, coffee-shops and restaurants to a situation where a relatively small number of brandowners control multiple outlets. Consequently, brand-awareness and brandrecognition is now much more important in food and beverage consumption. This is particularly so in food and beverage outlets, such as fast-food outlets and coffee-shops, typically found in the commercial and retail districts of urban environments.
It is an object of this invention to provide further opportunities for branding of food and/or beverage products. It is a further object of this invention to increase the level of brand- awareness and brand-recognition of a food and/or beverage vendor. It is a further object of this invention to provide a method of marketing and/or advertising, particularly a method of marketing and/or advertising a brand.
According to this invention, there is provided a method of applying a logo, trademark or advertisement to a foodstuff or beverage wherein the logo, trademark or advertisement is reproduced by means of, or using, edible material, said method comprising the steps of: (i) positioning a stencil over the surface of the foodstuff or beverage to which the logo, trademark or advertisement is to be applied, (ii) applying the edible material over the stencil, and (iii) removing the stencil, wherein the stencil comprises one or more apertures corresponding in shape to the logo, trademark or advertisement.
Preferably the beverage is coffee, particularly a cappuccino coffee. The edible material is preferably in powder form and is preferably selected from cocoa, chocolate or cinnamon powder. The aperture(s) in the stencil allow the powder to pass through and reproduce the logo, trademark or advertisement on the froth of the coffee of foodstuff. The logo or trademark thereby becomes more memorable in the mind of the consumer. The stencil may also advertise other products of the brand owner by imparting wording or symbols suggesting the other product. In a preferred embodiment, the method is a method of applying a logo or trademark.
The stencil may be made from any suitable material which is approved for use in food packaging or food-handling including, for instance, metal (including stainless steel and aluminium); cartonboard or paperboard optionally coated with a hydrophobic polymeric material such as polyethylene terephthalate, and optionally metallised; thermoplastic or thermoses polymeric materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyester, melamine or acrylic. The stencil material is preferably moisture resistant, allowing it to be washed and re-used. The stencil may be opaque, or may be transparent and coloured. The stencil may be made using any manufacturing technique appropriate to the material used.
For instance, a stencil comprising a polymeric material may be made by injection moulding, expandable-bead moulding, compression or transfer moulding, and the like. A metal stencil may be fabricated according to conventional metal fabrication techniques used in the manufacture of, for instance, kitchen equipment, for instance, casting (including die casting and continuous casting).
The size and shape of the stencil are dictated by the desired size and shape of the representation of the logo or trademark, and by the size and content of the advertisement.
Typically, the stencil will be have dimensions in the range of about 10 to about 30 cm, preferably from about 12 to about 20cm, in width and/or length, and typically about 15 cm.
The thickness of the stencil is normally less than 1 cm.
In one embodiment, the stencil is relatively longer in one of the width and length dimensions such that there is provided a handle portion and a body portion, wherein the handle portion comprises part of the longest dimension of the stencil, and wherein the apertures are disposed in the body portion.
In an alternative embodiment, the stencil has substantially equal length and width dimensions.
The stencil may have applied to a surface thereof instructions for use of the stencil.
In a further aspect, the invention also provides a stencil adapted for applying a logo, trademark or advertisement to a foodstuff or beverage wherein the logo, trademark or advertisement is reproduced by means of, or using, edible material, and wherein the stencil comprises one or more apertures corresponding in shape to the logo, trademark or advertisement, and preferably wherein said stencil comprises a body portion and a handle portion such that the apertures are disposed in the body portion.
The invention described herein is illustrated by figures 1 to 4 in which: Figures 1 to 3 show a stencil (1) having a handle portion (2) and a body portion (3) describing an aperture (4) in the shape of a logo.
Figure 4 shows the stencil (1) in use, wherein a powder of an edible material (not shown) is sprinkled from a dispenser (5) over a beveragecontaining cup (6).
It will be appreciated that the figures are for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the invention. Modification of detail may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
