Abstract

A container (10) for housing a domestic gas fire and a trim for the fire for despatch to a customer includes a fire receiving enclosure (22), a trim receiving enclosure (24), a lid (26) for opening and closing the fire receiving enclosure and a lid (36) for selectably opening and closing the trim receiving enclosure, the lid (26) for the fire receiving enclosure and a lid (36) for the trim receiving enclosure being operable independently of one another.

Description

Domestic Fire Container The invention relates to a domestic fire
container, for housing a domestic fire for storage and retail.
Manufacturers of domestic gas fires offer a wide range of different trims for use with any particular fire. It is impossible to predict which trim option the customer will order and this can cause problems with the storage of the products. Typically, the fires are stored in cardboard containers, complete with a particular trim. However, before the fire is despatched for a customer, it is often necessary to remove the whole appliance from the container, and replace the trim with one of a different design.
According to the invention there is provided a domestic fire container for housing a domestic fire and a trim for the fire for despatch to a customer, the container including: a fire receiving enclosure; a trim receiving enclosure; a lid for selectively opening and closing the fire receiving enclosure; and a lid for selectively opening and closing the trim receiving enclosure; the lid for the fire receiving enclosure and the lid for the trim receiving enclosure being operable independently of one another.
The container preferably includes an outer box and a divider for separating the box into the fire receiving enclosure and the trim receiving enclosure. The divider may be formed separately from the outer box and may be made of a different material.
Preferably the outer box is substantially cuboid, having a base, side walls and end walls, and has the following dimensions: Preferably the box has a width of between 4()0mm and 1 200mm, a depth of between lOOmm and 450mm and a height of between (iOOmm and 90()mm.
Preferably the box is made of a cardboard material.
Preferably the lid for the fire receiving enclosure is hingedly attached to a side wall of the box, for pivotal movement to open and close the fire receiving enclosure. The lid may be formed as a unitary part of the box, the hinge being defined by a crease in the material of the box. The lid may include a top part and a flap part, the top part forming a top of the box when the lid is closed and a flap part tucking in parallel to the divider when the lid is closed. The flap part is preferably formed integrally with the top part, the two parts being divided by a crease in the material.
Preferably the lid for the trim receiving enclosure is hingedly attached to a side wall of the box, for pivotal movement to open and close the trim receiving enclosure. The lid may be formed as a unitary part of the box, the hinge being defined by a crease in the material of the box. The lid may include a top part and a flap part, the planar part forming a top of the box when the lid is closed and a flap part tucking in parallel to the divider when the lid is closed.
The flap part is preferably formed integrally with the top part, the two parts being divided by a crease in the material.
Preferably the container further includes a filler for positioning in the trim receiving enclosure when a trim is not contained therein. The filler may comprise a block of foamed material such as polystyrene.
An embodiment of the invention will be described for the purposes of illustration only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a domestic fire container according to the invention, with its lids partially open; Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the container of Fig. 1, with its lids closed; and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic horizontal section through a domestic fire container according to the invention, with a fire in place.
Referring to the drawings, a domestic fire container 10 includes a substantially cuboid cardboard box 12 including parallel, spaced apart side walls 14 and parallel, spaced apart end walls 16 joining the side walls. The box 12 further includes a base which is not visible in the drawings, and two lids, as described in more detail hereinafter.
The box is approximately GOOmm wide, 400mm deep and 650mm high.
Each end wall I 6 includes a generally oval opening 18 passing therethrough, the opening being located near a top of the end wall and functioning as a carrying handle.
The container JO further includes a planar divider 20 which is parallel to the side walls 14 and positioned about three times as far from one side wall 14a as it is from the other side wall 14h (see Fig. 3). The divider 20 thus separates the container 10 into two enclosures, one being about three times the size of the other.
The larger enclosure 22 is able to receive a fire and the smaller enclosure 24 is adapted to receive a trim for a fire.
The fire receiving enclosure 22 includes a lid 26 which is formed integrally with the side wall 14a. A junction between the side wall 14a and the lid 26 is defined by a crease in the cardboard material of the box, the crease forming a hinge 28. The lid 2G includes a top part 30 and a flap part 32, a junction between the two also being defined by a crease in the cardboard, which forms a hinge 34.
The lid 26 may pivot about the hinge 28 between an open position where a fire may be inserted into or removed from the fire receiving enclosure 22 and a closed position in which the fire receiving enclosure 22 is shut. The closed position is illustrated in Fig. 2. In the closed position, the flap 32 tucks into the container 10, lying parallel to and adjacent to the divider 20.
The trim receiving enclosure 24 includes a lid 3fi which is formed integrally with the side wall 14b, a junction between the two being defined by a crease in the cardboard, forming a hinge 38. The lid 36' also includes a top part 40 and a flap 42 the junction between these two being defined by a crease in the cardboard forming a hinge 44. This lid 3(] may be pivoted about the hinge 38 between open and closed positions. In the closed position the flap 42 tucks into the box, adjacent to the divider 20 on the opposite side from the flap 32.
The container]0 is used as follows. A fire (see Fig. 3) 46 which is to be stored for subsequent despatch is placed in the fire receiving enclosure 22, together with its accessories. The lid 26 is moved into the closed position and stapled shut. Initially, a block of polystyrene material 48 is positioned in the trim receiving enclosure 24. At the time when the fire is ready for despatch, the trim receiving enclosure 24 may be opened and the polystyrene block removed.
A suitable trim (as required) may then be placed in the trim receiving enclosure 24. The lid 3(j may then be closed and stapled shut and the product despatched. There is thus provided a domestic fire container which overcomes the storage problems which manufacturers and sellers of fires presently encounter.
Various modifications may be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the shape of the container may obviously be modified to fit particular fires and trims. The location of the lids may be varied, for example the trim could be inserted from a side of the box.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to
those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
