Abstract

A secondary computer monitor screen (Screen B) used in tandem with a primary computer monitor screen (Screen A), to enable 'drag and drop' separation of the 'graphical user interface' palettes that provide access to tools and facilities used in various software programs. Screen B is either a separate unit or integrated within monitor casework alongside Screen A. The separate Screen B may be mounted to an edge of the primary monitor or used as a free standing or suspended unit. Screen B allows an unobstructed view of the work on Screen A, thus enhancing software operation and productivity.

Description

Computer screen.
This invention addresses the problem faced by computer users with software that uses palettes. Palettes are movable on-screen menus that enable switching between software tools, colours, effects etc. Typical use requires palettes to be 'on top' in the display and therefore partly obscure the visible work area. Users need to keep moving the palettes around in order to see particular work zones.
Until now the solution to this problem has been an additional conventional monitor screen on the desk on which to 'park' the palettes. Most modern computers provide for the use of more than one monitor screen. However whether CRT (cathode ray tube), LCD (liquid crystal display) or TFT (thin film transistor) screen display, monitors are generally not available in sizes smaller than fifteen inch (diagonal) viewable size. This results in an overall case size approximately fourteen inches wide by twelve inches high (plus stand); in the case ofthe cheaper CRT screens these dimensions are in the region of sixteen inches front to rear. Having two conventional monitors for each work station involves significant additional cost and often inconvenient as desk space is generally at a premium.
The invention is the provision of additional 'small footprint' computer monitor screen, hereafter referred to as Screen B (see diagram 1), to house palettes as used in most graphics, video, design and audio editing software.
Screen B. which may be for example an LCD or TFT screen, can be made in a range of sizes. The unit will be compact and lightweight, integrated with the main monitor casework or easily mounted as a separate unit to the edge of the main monitor (Screen A, diagram 1), for example by clips or velcro,''7t may also be available as a free standing or suspended unit, for example a small footprint stand adjustable for height and or tilt.
Screen B may be connected by conventional wired or non-wired means, as an integrated extension to Screen A. This enables the user to 'drag and drop' the palettes onto Screen B. allowing an unobstructed view ofthe work on Screen A. The innovation therefore provides for greatly enhanced software operation and productivity, reduced energy consumption and saves valuable desk space.
