Description

APPARATUS FOR USE IN
CHANGING THE CONDITION OF A PRODUCT
This invention relates to apparatus for use in changing the condition of a product, for example to make it more suitable for an intended or more demanding process. The apparatus may be used for changing the condition of products by, for example, tearing, teasing, refining or perforating. The apparatus may be used on a wide variety of products including, for example, textile fibres, sheets of non-woven material, or tobacco.
Known apparatus for use in changing the condition of a product comprises a body portion, and a plurality of pin members which extends transversely through the body portion. The body portion may be in the form of a stave, a bar or a cylinder. The pin members may be secured in the body portion in different densities. The resulting apparatus may be used for tearing, teasing, refining or perforating goods such for example as textile fibres, sheets of non-woven fibres, or tobacco. Generally, the apparatus can be used in a variety of different ways for mechanically treating a variety of different products.
The known apparatus has developed over many years. The known apparatus was originally such that the body portion was made of wood and the pin members were provided in the wood. With the passage of time, the use of wood has tended to be replaced by aluminium or plastics materials.
More modern versions of the known apparatus have a body portion made of
i the aluminium or a plastics material, and holes are drilled into the body portion. The holes are larger than the cross section of the pin members.
The pin members are then placed in the drilled holes and they are glued in position. The glue helps to stop the pin members working loose during use of the apparatus, and falling out of the body portion.
In order to further secure the pin members in position, it is known to provide an adhesive layer on a rear side of the body portion. The adhesive layer encompasses heels of the pins extending from the rear side of the body portion. This method of additionally securing the pins in position is in use with pins of less than 2mm diameter and which densely populate the body portion. Even with the use of the adhesive layer, the pins still work loose and sometimes the adhesive layer breaks up and parts of the adhesive fall off the body portion. In some cases, adhesive falling into a product being treated can seriously contaminate the product being treated.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for use in changing the condition of a product, which apparatus comprises a body portion, a plurality of pin members which extend transversely through the body portion, and an adhesive retainer means which retains the pin members in position in the body portion, the adhesive retainer means being such that it extends along a first side of the body portion and engages the pin members, and the adhesive retainer means being such that it is reinforced with a textile fabric.
The reinforcement with the textile fabric strengthens the adhesive and reduces the chances of the adhesive breaking up. The use of the textile fabric also reduces the chances of the pin members working loose in the body portion during use of the apparatus.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the textile fabric is laid around parts of the pin members extending from the first side of the body portion, and in which an adhesive is then provided over the fabric material and around the parts of the pin members extending from the first side of the body portion. Other constructions for the textile fabric and the adhesive may be employed.
The textile fabric may be a scrim. Other types of textile fabric may be employed. Where the textile fabric is a scrim, then the scrim may be a woven scrim or a non-woven scrim. Preferably the scrim is a high-tenacity low-shnnk scrim.
The scrim may typically be a polyester scrim or a bi-component material scrim. The bi-component material scrim may be, for example, a metal/polyester material scrim.
The adhesive may be any suitable and appropriate adhesive including those adhesives currently used to retain the pin members in the body portion. The adhesive may be a single adhesive or a mixture of different adhesives. Typically, the adhesive is an epoxy resin/polyurethane adhesive. The body portion may be in the form of a stave, bar, cylinder or any other suitable and appropriate desired shape.
Preferably the body portion is made of aluminium. Other materials may be employed, including plastics materials and wood.
The pin members may have pointed ends which are positioned remote from the second side of the body portion. The pointed ends of the pin members may facilitate the mechanical action of the pin members on products being treated.
The pin members will usually be made of steel. The pin members may be made of any other suitable and appropriate material if desired.
The apparatus of the present invention will usually be one in which the pin members are located in position in holes which are made in the body portion, the holes being larger than the cross sectional size of the pin members in order to facilitate location of the pin members in the holes.
The apparatus of the present invention may comprise just one of the body portions and its pin members. Alternatively, the apparatus of the present invention may comprise two or more of the body portions and their pin members, the body portions being joined together. In order to facilitate this, the body portions may be provided with connector means. The connector means may be male and female formations at opposite ends of the body portions. Generally, any suitable and appropriate type of connector means including different types of connector formations may be employed. An embodiment of the invention wlil now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows known apparatus for use in changing the condition of a product; Figure 2 shows how the apparatus of Figure 1 can become defective during use; and Figure 3 shows apparatus of the present invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown known apparatus 2 for changing the condition of a product. The apparatus 2 comprises a body portion 4 and a plurality of pin members 6 which extend transversely through the body portion 4.
As can best be seen from Figure 2, the body portion 4 is provided with a plurality of holes 8. The body portion 4 is made of aluminum and the holes 8 are of larger cross sectional size that the cross sectional size of the pin members 6. The pin members 6 are retained in the holes 8 by an adhesive 10 which is provided on a first side 12 of the body portion 4. The adhesive 10 extends around tail ends 14 of the pin members 6.
The adhesive 10 tends to break up in use. Bits of adhesive falling into products being treated may often seriously contaminate the products being treated. Also, as the adhesive starts to break up, the pin members 6 may work loose and fall out of their holes 8 in the body portion 4. This is especially so because the holes 8 are usually larger than the diameter of the pin members 6 and thus there is no tight frictional fit of the pin members 6 in their holes 8.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown apparatus 20 of the present invention for changing the condition of a product. In the apparatus 20,
similar parts as in the apparatus 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
In Figure 3, the pin members 6 are retained in their holes 8 by adhesive retainer means which is the adhesive 10 but reinforced with a textile fabric 18. The reinforcement of the adhesive 10 with the textile fabric 18 is effective to increase the strength of the adhesive 10 such that the adhesive 10 does not tend to break up during use of the apparatus 16 and thus possibly contaminate the product being treated. As can be seen from Figure 3, the textile fabric 18 is laid around the parts of the pins extending from the first side 12 of the body portion 4. The adhesive 10 is then provided over the textile fabric and around the parts of the pin members extending from the first side of the body portion 12.
The textile fabric 18 is preferably a scrim. The scrim may be a woven or a non-woven scrim. Preferably, the scrim is a high-tenacity, low-shrink polyester scrim.
The pin members 6 have pointed ends 20. These pointed ends 20 are remote from a second side 22 of the body portion 4. The pin members 6 are made of steel.
The apparatus 16 is provided with connector means in the form of a male connector formation 24 and a female connector formation 26. These male and female connector formations 24, 26 enable different body portions 4 to be connected together and thus to form apparatus comprising a plurality of the body portions 4.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the body portion 4 may be made of a metal other than aluminium and the pin members 6 may be made of a metal other than steel. If desired, the body porition 4 and/or the pin members 6 may be made of a plastics material. The body portion 4 may be in the form of staves, bars or cylinders. The pin members 6 may be pressed into the body portion 4 rather than holes being first drilled. Other types of connector means than the male and female connector portions 24, 26 may be employed. Any suitable and appropriate type of adhesive 10 may be employed, including a single adhesive or a mixture of adhesives. The pin members 6 used in the apparatus 16 may be of any suitable and appropriate cross sectional shape including circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal and octagonal. The apparatus may form part of a wide variety of different types of machines for treating a wide variety of products so that, for example, the apparatus may be used in carding machines for refining textile fibres or tobacco.
