Abstract

A device for protecting waste disposal bags from damage by scavenging animals, comprising a collapsible cover made of a tear resistant material adapted to encompass at least one waste disposal bag and means for securing the said cover when it has been placed in position over a waste disposal bag, or bags. The cover may comprise a bag 101 of fabric such as a strong woven plastics material, with a drawstring to be tightened to secure the bag in position over the filled waste disposal bag(s). A cord 103 may be pulled to pull cords 102 which are attached about halfway along the bag 101, thus collapsing the bag 101 and retracting it into a housing 105 attachable to a wall by brackets 107. Alternatively the fabric of the cover may be carried by a plurality of hoops which are pivoted on a common axis.

Description

( WASTE DISPOSAL BAG PROTECTION DEVICE
The present invention relates to a device for protecting waste disposal bags from the ravages of scavengers, and more specifically, to a device for protecting waste disposal 5 bags from damage by birds, foxes, cats and dogs.
Many local authorities only provide robbish disposal bags made of a Datively thin plastics material and these suffer severely from damage by scavenging animals such as birds, cats, dogs or urban foxes. The problem is particularly severe in coastal areas 10 where there is a large population of birds known colloquially as 'sea gulls' although more than one species is covered by this designation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for protecting waste disposal bags and the like from damage by scavenging animals.
IS According to the present invention there is provided a device for protecting waste disposal bags from damage by avenging animals, comprising a collapsible cover made of a tear-resistant material adapted to encompass at least one waste disposal bag and means for securing the said cover when it has been placed in position over a 20 waste disposal bag, or bags.
One form of collapsible cover consists of a bag made of a tear-resistant fabric, the bag having a draw string or elasticated bottom by means of which it can be closed when it has been placed in position around a waste disposal bag, or bags.
Preferably there is included a housing adapted to be attached to a structure and means for retracting the bag of tear-resistant material into the housing when the protective device is not in use.
30 According to the present invention in a particular aspect there is provided a device for protecting at least one waste disposal bag from damage by scavenging animals, comprising a bag made of tear-resistant material and having means for closing the bag when it has been placed in position around a waste disposal bag, or bags, a housing
( adapted to be attached to a structure and means for retracting the bag into the housing 5 when the bag is not in use.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a longitudinal sectional axis of an embodiment of the invention. Referring to the drawing, a device for protecting waste disposal bags from damage by scavenging animals, particularly sea birds, consists of a bag 101 made of a strong woven plastics material such as that used for sack bags, which is provided with a drawstring at its open end or elasticated bottom edge and at least three cords 102 15 attached approximately halfway along the bag 101. The cords 102 are attached to a single cord 103 which passes through a hole 104 in the top of a cylindrical housing 105 which is made of a non- corrodible material such as a plastics material, and thence to a cleat 106. The housing 105 is provided with a bracket 107 by means of which it can be attached to a wall, or other structure and a bell-mouth 108 to facilitate the entry 20 of the bag 101 into the housing 105 when the cord 103 is pulled. The cords 102 which are attached to the cord 103 facilitate the collapsing of the bag 101 to enable it readily to enter the housing 105.
In use, the cord 103 is released from the cleat 106 and the bag 101 is removed from 25 the housing 105. The bag 101 is placed over the waste disposal bag, or bags, and the drawstring is tightened to secure the bag 101 in position. A refuse collector would release the drawstring or open the bottom of the bag 101 to extract the waste disposal bag, or bags and then, ideally, pull the cord 103 to retract the bag 101 into the housing 105 and make up the cord 103 on the cleat 106 to retain the bag 101 in the housing 30 105 until it is required for use again As described, the bag 101 and housing 105 are circular in cross-section, but other crosssections, such as rectangular or square, can be used for the housing 105 and/or the bag 101.
! 5 In another embodiment of the invention which is not illustrated, the collapsible cover is attached to a plurality of hoops which are hinged on a common axis so that it can be collapsed and stowed against a wall or other structure, and opened when required.
The top hoop includes lugs by means of which the device can be attached to the wall 10 or other structure and the bottom loop is weighted to keep the cover in position.
Alternatively, a latch mechanism can be employed to retain the cover in its open position.
