Abstract

The invention provides apparatus and a method for glazing a toilet bowl of the variety with a sump 4 and a trapway 5 leading to the outlet 6. Glaze 51 is applied to the main body of the bowl and excess glaze 54 collects in the sump. The bowl is rotated (figure 2) so that the trapway extends downwards and the excess glaze drains through and coats the trapway. The apparatus comprises a frame (11, figure 3) pivotally attached to a stand 10, with a first support 36 fixed to the frame to receive the base 2 of the toilet and a second support 31 that is moveable relative to the frame to engage and disengage the toilet rim. A locking pin 41 secures the frame in both the upright and draining positions and a ram forces the second support to grip the toilet bowl, which is wetted prior to spray application of glaze through nozzle 50.

"A METHOD APPARATUS EitOR Gl,A7,1Nt.'' IntroducHo, 5 The invention relates to glazing of ceramic wares and in particular to glazing of a ceramic toilet bowl of the type having a base, a bowl section having an upper rim portion and a lower sump leading to a trapway with an outlet.
Robotic systems are available for applying a glaze to a ceramic ware prior to firing.
10 However, is is extremely difficult to automatically apply glaze to difficult to access areas of a ware such as the trapway of a toilet bowl. Generally glaze is applied to this region of a toilet bowl Inanually. However this is time consuming, inefficient and, unless the operative is highly skilled can lead to reject products due to issuf6cient or excess glaze being applied.
There is therefore a need for an improved method and apparatus for glazing toilet bowls. 20 Statements of Invention

Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will be more clearly understood from the Allowing description
thereof, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying 5 drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is an elevattonal, partially cross-sectional view of the glazing of a toilet bowl in an upright configuration; 10 Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. I with the toilet bowl in a draining configuration; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a toilet bowl glazing apparatus; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detail of the apparatus of Fig. Detailed Description
Referring to the drawings there is illustrated a method and an apparatus for glazing 20 the interior of a toilet bowl 1 of the type comprising a base 2 a bowl section 3 having a lower sump region 4 leading to a trapway 5 with a discharge outlet 6, and an upper rim portion 7.
The glazing apparatus comprises a stand 10 and a support frame 11 which is 25 pivotally mounted by a pivot pin 12 to the stand 10.
The stand 10 is generally T-shaped and comprises a vertical support leg 15 and a pair of horizontal anus 16, 17. The arms 16, 17 have respective [acing plates 18, 19 at the ends thereof and the plates 18, 19 have respective latch holes 20, 21. The leg 15 30 also has a facing plate 23 with a latch hole 24.
The support frame 11 comprises an upper support 30 having a facing pad 31 and a lower support 35 win a facing pad 36. The upper Support 30 is longitudLnaliy movable relative to the frame t 1 by ram 32. A switch 6() with a manually operated handle 61 is mounted on the lower support 35. The switch 60 is used to activate the 5 ram.32. The lower support 35 is fixed to the frame 11. Releasable locking means is provided by a locking pin 40 which is manually operated by a handle 41 for movement between a normally spring biased locked position in which the pin 40 is engaged in one of the locking holes 20, 21, 24 and a disengaged position in which the pin 40 is released from the locking holes arid the frame t I is pivotable relative to 10 the stand 10.
The ram 32 moves the upper support plate 30 froth a raised disengaged position as illustrated in Fig. 3 to allow the base 2 of the toilet bowl to be placed on the lower support 35. The ram 32 is then operated by moving the handle tS1 of the switch 60 to lS extend the support plate 30 downwardly until the pad 31 engages the rim of He toilet bowl 1 as itlusuated in Fig. 1. In this configuration the lower support 35 is locked in the horizontal configuration in which the locking pin 40 is engaged in the locking hole 24 of the facing plate 23 on the vertical leg t5 of the support stand l0.
To tum the toilet bowl 1 into the draining orientation illustrated in Fig. 2, an operator 20 disengages the locking pin 40 from the locking hole 24 and the support frame 11 pivots relative to the stand 10 (Fig. 4). To lock the frame in the re-orientated configuration the pin 40 is first retracted by Me handle 41 and, using the facing plate 18 or 19, guided into the appropriate locking hole 20, 21. The handle 41 is then released to lock the pin 40 in the locking hole.
Refemng in particular to Figs. 1 and the apparatus is Scud for glazing the interior surface of a toilet bowl 1 by first placing the base 2 of the bowl 1 on the lower support pad 36 in the upright configuration of Fig. 3. The ram 32 is actuated as described above and We bowl is fixed in position. The operator then first cleans the 30 surface to be glazed using an air jet or the like and then applies seater to the surface to be glazed. I]sing a spray nozzle 50 a glaze spray is applied to the exposed inner
surface of the bowl such that a layer 52 of glaze forms on the face of the bowl up to the level of the entry to the trapway 5. Excess glaze 54 runs off and collects in the sump 4 of the bowl. The operator then releases the handle 41 allowing the support frame 11 to pivot until the discharge outlet 6 of the trapway is lowennost as 5 illustrated in Fig. 2. On fuming of the bowl 1 the excess glaze 54 runs from the sump 4 into the trapway 5 drub coating the wall of the trapway 5 with a glaze layer 56. Excess glaze drains from the outlet 6 into a receptable 55 for recycling. O completion of the glazing, the handle 41 is gripped by the operator to release the pin 40 from the locking hole 21 and the support frame 11 is pivoted back into the upright 10 configuration of Fig. 1. The switch 60 is operated by the handle 61 to release the ram 32, raising the upper support plate 30 and allowing the glazed toilet bowl to be removed for further processing and firing.
We have found that for optimum performance characteristics the density of the glaze 15 should be in the range 1660 to 1690 grams per litre.
The invention is not limited to Me embodiments hereinbefore described which may be varied in detail.
