Description

1 2386868
SEAT ASSEMBLY
The present invention relates to seat assemblies, in particular to seat assemblies for use in vehicles such as automobiles.
It is known for vehicle manufacturers to provide vehicles offering different interior configurations which depend on the position of the seats of the vehicle. For example, the seat assembly behind the driver can be moved so as to provide for an increased cargo carrying space.
A problem associated with being able to move the seat assembly into different configurations is that of isolating the cargo carrying space from the remaining interior space of the vehicle.
It is known to overcome this problem by providing a separate partition which is positioned behind the seat assembly, thus dividing the cargo carrying space from the remaining interior space of the vehicle.
However, this separate partition has disadvantages in that it is difficult to manoeuvre and position inside the vehicle, often requiring additional components, and it further requires storing when the cargo carrying space does not require isolating. Often this results in vehicle owners removing the separate partition from the vehicle.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved method of dividing an interior space of a vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a seat assembly for a vehicle, the seat assembly including a seat back, the seat back including a partition, in which the seat back is moveable relative to the vehicle so as to provide for different interior configurations, the partition being moveable relative to the seat back and being suitable for dividing an interior space of the vehicle into a first and second region.
Advantageously this removes the requirement for a separate partition, enabling the interior regions of the vehicle to be isolated more easily.
The invention will now be described, by way if example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle including a seat assembly according to the present invention, showing the seat back in a first seat back position, and the seat base in a first seat base position, Figure 1A is a side view of a the vehicle of figure 1 showing the window glass in a closed position Figure 2 is a side view of the vehicle of figure 1 showing the seal base in a second seat base position, Figure 2A is a side view of the vehicle of figure 1 showing the window glass in an open position, Figure 3 is a rear view of the vehicle of figure I showing the seat assembly in the configuration of figure 1, Figure 4 is a side view of the vehicle of figure 1 showing the seat back in a second seat back position.
Figure 5 is a rear view of the vehicle of figure 1 showing the seat assembly in the configuration of figure 2, Figure 6 is a plan view of the vehicle of figure 1 showing the seat assembly in the configuration of figure 2A,
Figure 7 is a side view of a vehicle including a seat assembly according to the another aspect of the present invention, showing the seat back in a first seat back position, and the seat base in a first seat base position, Figure 8 is a side view of a the vehicle of figure 7, showing the seat base in the second seat base position, Figure 9 is a side view of a the vehicle of figure 7, showing the seat back in the second seat back position, Figure 10 is a side view of the vehicle of figure 7, showing the window glass in the closed position, and Figure 11 is a side view of a vehicle including a seat assembly according to a further aspect of the present invention.
With reference to figure 1, there is shown a vehicle 60 including a seat assembly 10. The seat assembly 10 is positioned in an interior space 40 of the vehicle behind a front seat 11 which accommodates a driver and a passenger (not shown).
The seat assembly includes a seat back 12, shown in a first seat back position which is substantially upright, and a seat base 14, shown in a first seat base position which is substantially horizontal. Seat back 12 includes a seat back cushion 12A and seat base 14 includes a seat base cushion 14A. The positions of the seat back and base in figure 1 correspond to a normal seating position.
The seat back has a seat back surface 23.
The seat back includes a recess 20, into which a partition in the form of a window glass 18 is received.
In other embodiments the window glass may not be located inside a recess, for example the window glass may be located on the seat back surface 23.
In other embodiments the partition may not be transparent, as is the case with the window glass, in which case, other means would be required to provide for rearward vision.
The seat assembly includes a partition moving mechanism in the form of a window regulator mechanism 16 which is located adjacent the recess and is integral with the seat back. The window regulator mechanism supports and guides the window glass as it is moved relative to the seat back, using suitable drive means, between an open position as shown in figure 1, and a closed position as shown in figure 1A.
The drive means could be manual, i.e. a manual window winder. or power driven by a window regulator motor.
With the window glass in the closed position, the interior space 40 is divided into a first region. in the form of a cargo region 48, and a second region in the form of a passenger region SO. Thus the window glass movement enables the interior space to be divided into cargo and passenger regions.
With reference to figures 1 and 2, the seat assembly includes a seat base mechanism 13.
one part of which is located on fixed structure of the vehicle, the other part of which is secured to the seat base, the seat base mechanism allowing the seat base to pivot relative to the vehicle, between first (figure 1) and second (figure 2) seat base positions.
It can be seen from figure 2 that the second seat base position is substantially vertical.
The seat assembly includes a seat back mechanism 15 one part of which is located on fixed structure of the vehicle the other part of which is secured to the seat back, the seat back mechanism allowing the seat back to pivot relative to the vehicle between first (figure 1) and second (figure 4) seat back positions, and thus provide for different interior configurations.
It should be noted that in the embodiments shown in figures 7 to 10 (further described below) the other part of the seat back mechanism is located on the seat base as opposed to the fixed structure of the vehicle.
With the seat base in the second seat base position, the seat back can move to the second seat back position as shown in figure 4, thus providing a larger cargo region, with the seat back surface 23 providing an extension to a vehicle load floor 44. It will be appreciated that in this embodiment the window glass will need to be in the closed position as shown in figure 2A before the seat back can be moved to the second seat back position.
In other embodiments the seat back and seat base can be arranged in such a way that it is not necessary for the seat base to move to the second seat base position to enable the: seat *, back to move to the second seat back position.
Various forms of sealing are provided on the vehicle and/or the seat assembly for sealing between the first (cargo) and second (passenger) regions with the seat back and seat base in their first and second positions, and these are described below, with reference to figures 1 -
to 6. The seat assembly includes a lower glass seal 26 which is positioned on an upper surface 27 of the seat back, on the front and rear sides of the recess 2O, the lower glass seal forming a seal between the window glass and the seat back.
A seal? in the form of a vehicle glass seal 34 is located on a region of the vehicle which is adjacent the window glass when the window glass is in the closed position. The vehicle glass seal 34 includes a recess 35 which accornnodates the window glass when it is in the closed position, thus forming a seal between the adjacent region of the vehicle and the window glass.
A seal, in the form of a seat back seal 28 is positioned on the seat back surface 23 and forms a seal between the seat back surface and both adjacent regions of the vehicle and adjacent regions of the seat assembly in both the first and second seat back positions.
With the seat back in the first seat back position, the seat back seal 28 forms a seal between the seat back surface 23 and the adjacent region of the vehicle load floor 44, and between the seat back surface and the adjacent region of inner panels 36 of the vehicle.
With the seat back in the second seat back position, the seat back seal 28 forms a seal between the seat back surface 23 and the adjacent region of the vehicle load floor 44, between the seat back surface 23 and the adjacent region of inner panels 36, and between the seat back surface 23 and the adjacent region of the seat base 14.
Thus with the seat back in the first position and the window in the closed position, the interior space of the vehicle is divided into cargo and passenger regions, and the combination of the seat back seal 28, the vehicle glass seal 34, and the lower glass seal 26 forms a seal between the regions.
Both the seat back and the seat base include a latching mechanism (not shown) which retains the seat back and the seat base in the desired first or second position.
It will be appreciated that with the seat back in the second position as shown in figure 4, the window glass must be in the open position, and that there is no means of sealing between the cargo carrying space and the passenger space. With the seat back in this second position, the sealing is still effective in that whilst it does not prevent odours from the cargo region entering the passenger region, the sealing is watertight, thus preventing any water present on the vehicle load floor of the cargo region entering the passenger region. With reference to figure 7, there is shown an alternative vehicle 160 including a seat assembly l l O in which features which perform the same function as those in the embodiment of figures 1 to 6 are numbered 100 greater.
The seat assembly 1 10 includes a base panel 122 which is located on a lower surface 121 of the seat base 1 14.
The seat base mechanism 113 differs from that of the embodiment of figures 1 to 6 since the second seat base position of seat base 14 is substantially vertical, compared to the second seat base position of seat base 14 which is substantially horizontal, and therefore the seat base mechanism allows the seat base to be inverted to the position of figure 8.
With the seat base in the inverted position, the base panel 122, being located on the lower surface 121 is now uppermost in the vehicle, and provides an extension of the vehicle load floor 144.
The seat back moving mechanism (not shown), which is integral with the base panel 122,.
differs from the embodiment of figures 1 to 6 in that whereas the second seat back position of seat back 12 is substantially horizontal, the second seat back position of seat back 112 is substantially vertical, with the mechanism allowing the seat back to slide to the position of figure 9, and thus increase the size of the cargo region.
The seat back mechanism will typically include a track (not shown) located in the base if;, panel 122, with the seat back including a feature (not shown) to locate in and be guided by the track as it moves between the first and second seat back positions.
In other embodiments, the extension of the vehicle load floor can be provided by a separate panel, rather than a base panel of the seat assembly. Under these circumstances the seat back moving mechanism would be integral with the seat back or with the vehicle itself.
The window glass 118 divides the interior space 140 into the cargo carrying space 148 and the passenger region 15O, but whereas in the embodiment of figures 1 to 6 the window glass could not be closed with the seat back in the second (substantially horizontal) position, in this embodiment the second position corresponds to the seat back being substantially vertical and enables the window glass to be closed. Therefore the increased
cargo region corresponding to the seat back in the second position can be divided from the passenger regions as shown in figure 10.
As in the embodiment of figures 1 to 6, various forms of sealing are provided on the vehicle and/or the seat assembly for sealing between the first (cargo) and second (passenger) regions with the seat back and seat base in their first and second positions, and these are described below, with reference to figures 7 to 1 OA.
In this embodiment, since the window glass can be closed with the seat back in two positions, two vehicle glass seals 134 are provided, and are located on the regions of the vehicle which are adjacent the window glass when the window glass is in the closed position with the seat back in both the first and second seat back positions.
In other embodiments the geometry of the vehicle glass seals may be different to compensate for the curvature of the vehicle roof.
The seat back seal 128 performs the same function as seat back seal 28 when the seat back is in the first position, i.e. forming a seal between the inner panels 136 and the vehicle load floor 144.
However' with the seat back in the second seat back position, as shown in figure 9, the seat back seal 128 forms a seal between the seat back surface 123 and the inner panel 136 and the sealing between the base panel 122 and adjacent regions, i.e. the vehicle load floor 144, and the idler panels 136, is provided by a base panel seal 132 which is located on the base panel 122. The sealing between the seat back surface 123 and the base panel 122 is provided by the seat back seal 128 and the base panel seal 132 which form a seal between them. It should be noted that the seal between the seat back surface and the inner panel differs from that of the embodiment of figures 1 to 6 only in that the seat back is substantially vertical in this embodiment, the seal therefore being formed between a different region of the inner panel and the seat back surface.
Thus with the seat back in either the first or second position and the window in the closed position, the interior space of the vehicle is divided into cargo and passenger regions, and the combination of the seat back seal 128, the vehicle glass seal 134, the lower glass seal 126 and the base panel seal 132 forms a seal between the regions.
Figure 11 shows an alternative embodiment, in which the vehicle 260 has a retractable roof panel 280. The seat assembly 210 includes sealing as described in the embodiment of figures 7 to lO, the seals 232, 234, 226, 228 forming a seal between the cargo region 248 which is now exposed to outside elements, and the passenger region 250.
In the embodiments of figures 1 to 11 the sealing between the seat assembly and the vehicle is located on the seat assembly, except in the case of the window glass where the seal is located on the vehicle. In other embodiments the seal could be located on the vehicle to provide sealing between the seat assembly and the vehicle.
Similarly where the sealing between the seat components themselves (seat back, seat base, base panel) is provided by a seal located on one of the seat back, seat base, and base panel, in other embodiments it is possible to locate the seal on the other of the seat back, seat base and base panel.
In the embodiments of figures 1 to ll the sealing between the seat assembly and the vehicle is provided by including one seal on either the vehicle or the seat assembly, the sealing being provided between said seal and the vehicle or seat assembly. In other embodiments, a two part seal could be provided with one part on the vehicle and another part on the seat assembly, with the two parts of the seal forming a seal between them.
It will be appreciated in the embodiments of figures l to 11, that the sealing provided on the seat assembly and/or the vehicle must be sufficiently flexible to allow for the movement of the seat assembly.
The sealing between the seat assembly and the vehicle, be it in one part or two part form, can also include a channel, so as to capture and direct any water present in the cargo region.
This is particularly applicable to the seals which are located between the vehicle load floor (and the extended load floor in the form of the seat back or base panel) and the vehicle.
It should be appreciated that the present invention is not limited to vehicles with one seat assembly. For example, there may be several seat assemblies provided inside a vehicle, each seat assembly defining an interior region of the vehicle, with each seat assembly including a partition which is suitable for dividing the interior regions.
Whilst the embodiments of figures 1 to 11 describe a vehicle which has independent mechanisms for controlling seat movement and window glass movement, it would be possible to provide an automatic control which operates the mechanisms in sequence, for example, one touch of a button would automatically invert the seat base, move the seat back to its second position, and close the window glass. In such an embodiment, the drive means for the window glass would need to include a motor.
