Abstract

An intravenous catheter protector which comprises a moulded, clear plastic dome. The catheter protector has an elasticated finger ring and releasable wrist straps to enable it to be secured to the back of the patients hand. Ventilation holes may also be provided in the dome. May protect the catheter from damage, and prevent snagging on the bedclothes.

Description

INTRAVENOUS CATHETER PROTECTOR
The invention relates to protection of intravenous catheters, which are inserted on the back of the hand, prior to treatment at a Hospital.
Such catheters suffer from problems that they are vulnerable to impact being caught in clothing, causing bruising to the area, pain to the patient and are often damaged or dislodged, resulting in a new catheter having to be installed in a new position, in an already sensitive area of the hand The object of the invention is to protect the catheter and patient from accidental impact, dislodging and possible damage.
Accordingly, this invention provides protection to the catheter by a selfsupporting domed moulding.
The IV protector is positioned over the IV catheter, without touching it, and is secured by an elasticated ring at the front of the catheter, which fits over the most convenient finger [depending on the position of The catheter. This will hold the protector in position at the front.
Releasable straps are fitted to tabs on the protectors flanged base; these are secured around the patient's wrist. Together with the ring at the front of the protector, these straps will hold the protector securely in position, while allowing for quick removal of protector when treatment via the catheter is required.
The domed Protector is made of clear plastic to allow inspection of the catheter. The Plastic material is rigid enough to protect the catheter but flexible enough to fit the contour of the hand comfortably by means of a flange around the base of the protector in contact with the hand. Small holes in the protector will allow air in for the skin to breath.
Figure 1 on drawing shows protector in situ, held by straps and elasticated ring, showing the catheter beneath the protector.
Figure 2 shows a Plan view ofthe protector, showing fixing straps and ventilation holes.

Claims (3)

1. The intravenous catheter protector is a moulded clear plastic dome, secured to the back of the patients hand by an elasticated finger ring and releasable wrist fixing straps. This invention provides protection to the intravenous catheter.
2. This protector protects against impacts on the catheter.
3. The protector also prevents the catheter snagging in bed clothes and the patients clothing.
4 The protector is easily applied and removed.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows Claims 1 amended
Claims 2. 3. and 4 deleted Claims 5. 6. 7. and 8 added CLAIM I The Intravenous Catheter Protector is a moulded clear plastic dome with vent holes and a base flange to which securing plastic wrist straps and an elasticated finger ring is attached, and used to hold the dome over the catheter to act as a guard, CLAIM The wrist straps and finger ring in claim lhold the dome in place by pulling horizontally against each other, so very little resultant downward force is used to secure the protector to the hand as is required by using straps or tape CLAIM 6 The elsticated finger ring of the Catheter Protector claimed in claim 1, is looped over the finger closest to the position of the catheter to locate the dome centrally over the catheter CLAIM 7 The plastic wrist straps of the Catheter Protector claimed in claim 1, are adjustable and releasable CLAIM 8 The elasticated finger ring of the Catheter Protector claimed in claim 1 is designed to stretch as the hand flexes
