Abstract
A patch for blister prevention/protection comprises a first sheet 11 for contact with a section of skin, a second sheet 12 for contact with a rubbing element and a plurality of rubbing sheets 13,14,15 overlying each other and secured to each other round their periphery 16, defining a rubbing portion interposed between the first 11 and second 12 sheets. The rubbing portion is attached on one side to the first sheet 11 and on the other side to the second sheet 12 leaving the rubbing sheets 13,14,15 free to move relative to each other. Preferably the first sheet 11 has an adhesive layer on its external surface for adhesive attachment to the skin. The rubbing sheets 13,14,15 are preferably formed from nylon polymers such as polythene and maybe coated in a low friction material, three rubbing sheets 13,14,15 are preferably provided.

Patch For Blister Prevention and Protection
The present invention relates to patches for blister prevention and/or blister protection.
Friction can occur when a relatively hard, rough surface moves against a relatively soft one. It is well known that the frictional resistance between a tight-fitting or a loaded object against the skin of a human or other animal can cause blisters. Blisters are the skin's protective mechanism against this frictional resistance, but often result in discomfort and pain and even to incapacitance in severe cases.
By way of example, where a shoe is in contact with the skin of the wearer there can be considerable friction because the coefficient of friction between skin and leather is relatively high. It is common to wear a sock between the leather of the shoe and the skin to reduce the friction, but this action does not always remove the tendency of the skin to blister and does not provide sufficient protection if a blister is already present.
According to the present invention there is provided a patch for blister prevention/protection comprising a first sheet for contact with a section of skin, a second sheet for contact with a rubbing element and a plurality of rubbing sheets overlaying each other and being interposed between the first and second sheets, the rubbing sheets being secured to each other to define a peripherally enclosed rubbing portion which is peripherally secured on one side to said first sheet and on the other side to said second sheet and in which the rubbing sheets are free to move relative to each other.
Preferably three rubbing sheets are provided.
In some arrangements the first sheet has an adhesive layer on its external surface remote from the rubbing portion for adhesive attachment to the skin.
It is a preferred feature that adjacent rubbing sheets are formed from or coated with materials having a low coefficient of friction relative
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
to each other. For example said material for the rubbing sheets may be made from nylon, polymers such as polythene or silk or maybe coated with a low friction material such as TEFLON (-rM) Normally the first and second sheets extend beyond the periphery of the rubbing portion.
In some arrangements, however, the patch is incorporated in an article of clothing or in a load bearing article such as shoulder pads.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described in more detail. The description makes reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a patch according to the present invention.
In the drawing there is shown the component parts of a patch 10 for blister prevention and/or blister protection. In the particular embodiment shown there is a flexible first sheet 11 made of, for example, a fabric material and a flexible second sheet 12 made of, for example, a fabric material.
In the embodiment shown, the first sheet 11 is intended to be fixed to the skin of a user by means of an optional adhesive layer on the free side. The second sheet 12 is for contact with a rubbing element which may be a shoe, for example, or a sock disposed between the skin and the shoe.
Between the first and second sheets 11,12 is a series of superposed rubbing sheets 13,14, 15, three in number in this embodiment. The rubbing sheets 13,14, 15 lie one on top of the other and are fixed to each other around their peripheries 16 to define a central rubbing portion. The periphery 16 of rubbing sheet 13 is also secured to the first sheet 11 and the periphery 16 of rubbing sheet 15 is also secured to the second sheet 12. The rubbing sheets 13,14, 15 are made from
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
materials which have a low coefficient of friction relative to adjacent rubbing sheets. For example, the rubbing sheets 13,14, 15 could be made from silk or nylon or polyethylene or another suitable polymer. The rubbing sheets 13,14, 15 therefore slide against each other very easily.
Alternatively, the rubbing sheets 13,14, 15 could be coated with materials having a low coefficient friction such as Teflon (-r' If a shoe is in contact with a user's foot, for example, the friction caused by relative movement between the shoe and the skin of the user may be sufficient for a blister to be caused. However, if a vulnerable area of the foot has the patch 10 applied, then the relative movement between the shoe and the skin would be accommodated by the rubbing sheets 13, 14,15 thereby resulting in minimal friction at the surface of the skin and thus minimising the tendency to blister.
If a blister is already present then the application of the patch 10 would again minimise friction at the surface of the skin/blister thereby minimising further discomfort and aggravation of the condition.
It is considered that benefits could still be obtained with only two rubbing sheets being provided between the first and second sheets 11,12, but three or more rubbing sheets provide a preferred arrangement. The patch 10 is shown as being rectangular but it will be appreciated that other shapes and sizes are possible.
Also the drawings show a continuous join between adjacent rubbing sheets and between the rubbing sheets and the first and second sheets, but discontinuous joins could also produce a patch having similar beneficial effects. It is also possible that the first and second sheets are secured directly to each other at locations outside of the peripheries 16 of the rubbing sheets 13,14, 15.
It is also envisaged that the patch could be adhered to the shoe itself rather than to the skin of the user or even incorporated within the
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
shoe with similar beneficial effect. Alternatively the patches 10 could be incorporated into articles of clothing, such as socks, at strategic points prone to blistering. The patches 10 could also be incorporated into other articles such as gloves, shoulder pads or anywhere where straps or tight fitting equipment or articles come into contact with the skin of the user.
