Abstract

An apparatus in the form of a mechanically driven toothbrush in which the motive power is provided by spring tension and the spring is tensioned by human effort. The handle 1 acts as an enclosure for components which include a mechanism 3 that converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion, a gearbox 4 to adjust the available torque and provides speed governance and a spring 5 which stores the energy to drive the mechanism. A winding knob 6 tensions the spring and a switch 7 enables the motion of the brush head 2 to be switched on or off.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
A Mechanically Driven Toothbrush This device relates to a mechanically driven toothbrush in which the motive power is provided by spring tension.
Currently, mechanically driven toothbrushes rely on an electric motor for their motive power. The electrical energy for the electric motor is typically supplied either by dry-cells, the mains electricity supply or rechargeable cells contained within the toothbrush handle.
In each of these cases (dry-cells, mains and rechargeable cells) the locations in which the toothbrush may be used or conveniently used is restricted. For example dry cell toothbrushes need a supply of replacement dry cells and both mains powered toothbrushes and rechargeable toothbrushes need a mains supply for their continued operation.
The first object of the current invention is to provide an apparatus that is in essence a mechanically driven toothbrush in which the motive power is provided by spring tension.
The second object of the current invention is to provide a mechanically driven toothbrush whereby continued operation of the apparatus is not dependent upon the availability of either dry-cells or a mains electricity supply.
According to the first aspect of the present invention there is provided an apparatus in the form of a mechanically driven toothbrush in which the motive power is provided by spring tension.
According to the second aspect of the present invention there is provided an apparatus in the form of a mechanically driven toothbrush whereby the energy to drive the mechanism and ultimately the toothbrush head is supplied by a human operator doing mechanical work upon the apparatus such that energy is stored as potential energy in a spring contained within the apparatus Figure 1 is a cut-away schematic diagram of the first embodiment of the present invention.
The first preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described by way of a nonrestrictive example with reference to Figure 1.
Enclosure 1 acts as the handle of the toothbrush and as a chassis and enclosure for other components of the apparatus. Components contained within the handle include a mechanism 3 that converts rotary motion into a reciprocating motion, a gearbox 4 to adjust the available torque and provide speed governance, a spring 5 for storing the energy to drive the mechanism, a winding knob 6 to tension the spring and a switch 7 to enable the motion of the brush head to be enabled or disabled, in effect switch 7 allows the tooth brush to be switched on or off To wind and use the toothbrush the switch 7 is first moved to its "off'position. The body 1 of the toothbrush is grasped in one hand and the winding knob 6 is grasped in the other

hand. The hands are then moved in opposite directions to affect a winding motion. Once the spring is wound the switch 7 can be moved to its"on"position and the toothbrush utilised.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible now that the present invention has been disclosed. Therefore, it is to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described above.
