Abstract

A Submersible Pump Grab comprises of a hook 1 suspended on a 'D' shackle 2 and tensioned by a spring 4 which is attached to a cam 5.The cam can be rotated by hand to tension the hook into a closed (latched) position against a striker 6 to collect and lift a pump or an open (release) position which will release the pump when it settles on it's base. The hook is moved to a release position by a rope moving the cam The hook, 'D' shackle and cam are attached to the main body of the Grab 3 which can be adjusted horizontally along a guide bar 7 to aline with a pump lifting eye 8. The horizontal guide bar is attached to the vertical guide plate (10, fig 4) which slides down pump guide rails(9)and guides the grab to the pump lifting eye and with the cam set in the closed position latches on automatically ready to lift the pump to the surface.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
SUBMERSIBLE PUMP GRAB This invention relates to a submersible pump grab with horizontal and vertical guides for alignment and includes a spring-tensioned hook.
Guided submersible pumps are used in the water and waste water industries and are very difficult to retrieve from the bottom of a sump or well.
The object of this invention is to be lowered by the retrieval hoist down the pump guides to the pump where it will automatically latch onto the lifting bracket on the pump and retrieve it from the sump or well.
Accordingly this invention provides a hook which is sprung loaded to grab the lifting bracket or release the lifting bracket depending on the set position of the spring tensioning cam and also a guide plate to locate the grab to the submersible pump.
It is preferable for the grab to be made from stainless steel to avoid corrosion but it can also be made from mild steel, which can be galvanised or painted.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :- Figure I Shows the grab in the latched or retrieving position.
Figure 2 shows the grab in the open or release position.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the grab in the release position.
Figure 4 shows the grab connected to the guide plate which is located on the guides.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
As shown in fig 1 the grab comprises a hook 1 connected to body 3 by "D"shackle 2 and tensioned by spring 4 and adjusting cam 5.
As shown in fig I the cam 5 is set in the latched position tensioning the hook 1 against the striker plate 6. When the grab is lowered onto the pump lifting bracket 8 it forces the hook 1 away from the striker plate 6 and slides up the striker plate 6 into the catch position and the hook I is forced back to the striker plate 6 by the tension spring 4 and the pump is lifted from the sump.
As showing fig 2 the cam 5 is set in the release position with the hook away from the striker plate 6.
The cam 5 can be set in this position with the pump hanging on the hook therefor the weight of the pump holds the hook 1 in the latched position.
When the pump is lowered onto its base releasing the weight of the pump which automatically releases the hook as the tension spring 4 pulls the hook away from the striker plate 6 and the grab can be raised leaving the pump in position.
If the pump is likely to catch or stick in any way on the guides 9 the pump should be lowered with the cam 5 set in the latched position with the trip line attached to it.
The cam 5 can be changed to the release position by pulling the trip line attached to it from above, when the pump is sat safely onto its base.
As shown in fig 4 the horizontal guide 7 fits into vertical guide plate 10 which in turn slides down guides 9 to position the grab onto pump lifting bracket 8.
