Abstract

A device for removing odours from a toilet bowl comprises a housing (20) containing a low-voltage electric motor (25) which draws odours from a toilet bowl through an inlet (22) and passes them via a non-return valve (26) to an outlet (30) and, optionally, into a sewer or to atmosphere.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
COMPACT AIR EXTRACTOR.
This invention relates to a means of extracting unwanted odours from toilet bowls commonly referred to as WCs and discharging the said odours into the atmosphere via small diameter conduits.
Unlike most conventional wall, ceiling and floor mounted extractor fans, this invention does not require large diameter ducting as the discharge is pressurised. As the present invention is motivated by a low voltage electric motor energised by either batteries or a suitable transformer, it is not subject to safety regulations and may be used in water closets, toilets, bathrooms and all areas and levels that would require such a device.
The aspects of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which; Figure 1 is a schematic side view of The Compact Air Extractor with transparent inner and outer casings for clarity.
Reference is made to figure I which shows the principal of operation and the direction of the airflow which is indicated with broken lines 14. Contaminated air is drawn into inlet 22 by the rotation of rotor blades 24. By reason of the design of the said rotor blades, fast rotation by low voltage electric motor 25 creates a vacuum at inlet 22 causing contaminated air to be drawn into the centre of rotor 24 and discharged around the outside diameter of the said rotor. This cycle in turn creates air pressure in area 29 of rotor inner casing 21 causing a pressurised air discharge via non return valve 26 to outlet 30.
The direction of airflow 14 serves to cool and minimally quieten electric motor 25. The rotor outer casing 20 serves to
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
COMPACT AIR EXTRACTOR. minimise noise and vibration caused by electric motor 25 and rotor blades 24 by isolating and suspending rotor inner casing 21 with shock absorbing material 27.
It is to particular advantage that the present invention requires only the minimum of space and power draw to provide a combined vacuum and pressure facility capable of extracting unwanted odours from known quarters and discharging them to atmosphere via common sewer pipes, water cistern overflow pipes or any other known atmospheric outlet with a minimum opening of 21mm.
The Compact Air Extractor is of particular advantage when used in conjunction with any known system and installed where contaminated air is a problem, particularly in toilet bowl and washroom areas.
The scope of the present invention is not intended to be limited by the foregoing detailed description of the embodiments shown herein, but is intended to extend to variations and modifications which would be apparent to a person skilled in the art.

Claims (4)

Compact Air Extractor. CLAIMS.
1.
This invention is a miniature vacuum. Unlike traditional vacuum's it does not have a collection bag on the outlet. With the exception of a non return valve to prevent the reverse flow of gases from a sewer or windage, it is a through discharge to an atmospheric outlet.
2.
This extractor is small and efficient. It is capable of extracting unwanted odours from the inside of a toilet bowl, and discharging them via a small bore conduit of unlimited length.
3.
The outlet of the extractor may be entered directly into a sewer pipe, branched into a water cistern overflow pipe or simply discharged into atmosphere.
4.
This invention has been approved by The Scottish Executive in Edinburgh as it conforms to part N (Electrical safety standards) of the Building (Scotland) act 1959, and is in accordance with the Technical Standards requirement in clause M2.1 regulating safety and hygiene in a sewerage discharge. It can also be used in conjunction with any mechanical extraction system described in clause K2.1 of the same act.
