Abstract

237,903. Pechkranz, R. Aug. 2, 1924, [Convention date]. Joint-making packing.-In apparatus for the electrolytic decomposition of water, e.g. apparatus of the filter-press type, the joints are packed with insulating material which is impregnated or covered with a pasty semi-liquid or liquid hydrocarbon, or mixture of hydrocarbons. The packing material should be such that it does not undergo progressive deformation when subjected to pressure. The hydrocarbons are preferably of considerable consistency and may be of complex structure having cyclic and bridge formulµ. Bitumens obtained by the refining of petroleum may be used. Relatively solid hydrocarbons may be treated with a volatile solvent such as benzol. The hydrocarbon may be physically or chemically combined with other materials such as "emarex." In an example asbestos cord is impregnated with warm tar, and before it has become solid is introduced, if necessary in grooves, between the surfaces to be packed. The surfaces themselves may be coated with the hydrocarbon or special grooves may be filled therewith. The edge portions of the joint members may be specially warmed before final tightening of the assembly. Cotton, hemp, or non-fibrous material may be used instead of asbestos. The material may be loosened before impregnation. Instead of being inserted between the jointing surfaces, the packing may constitute a continuous band or strip around the joints.
