Abstract

237,895. Bull, A. A. Aug. 4, 1924, [Convention date]. Density separators.-Air passing into the carburettor of an internal combustion engine is freed from grit in a separator with a cylindrical casing a and a domed bottom b; vanes h are provided at the top to give the entering air a vortical motion. The lower ends of the vanes'rest in channels g on the arms of a spider f supported by a shoulder e on the cylindrical casing a. The upper ends are welded to the arms of a movable spider which is held against rotary motion by a rib on the casing. The top of the spider j engages a nut k having a screw thread m in engagement with a thread on a thimble o clamped in the elbow q leading to the carburettor. An arm p on the nut k is linked to the carburettor throttle; as the throttle is opened the nut k rises along a helical path and the spring vanes h force the spider j upwards. This changes the inclination of the vanes and increases the cross sectional area of the air passage. The air enters the casing through the vanes and passes out through the pipe q. The dust drops to the base and is discharged through openings c provided with lips x. A hood d is placed over the bottom of the casing to prevent the separated dust from rising. In a modification the thimble and vanes are made integral with the casing and' the apparatus is therefore not adjustable.
