Abstract

A sports glove (e.g. for a goalkeeper) comprises a strap 4 which is secured (e.g by stitching) to a wrist cuff at one end, hook and loop fasteners 8 on the inside of the strap to mate with the outside of the wrist cuff, a trim 7 on the outside of the strap whose surface is profiled for gripping, an independent separately attached shaped part 11 which forms a thumb recess 19 on the outside, and a stop projection 20 towards the free end of the strap whose outer surface is made of non-slip material. The material of the shaped part may be an elastomeric plastic, and may be different from that of the material of the trim.

Description

1 2378120
Sports Glove The invention relates to a sports glove, and particularly but not exclusively to a goalkeeper's glove. The glove has a strap one end of which is stitched or otherwise secured to a wrist cuff, the outside of the wrist cuff and the inside of the strap are provided with hook-and-loop fasteners, and the strap is provided with a trim applied to the outside of an end piece, the trim externally forming profiling and an outer surface which can be gripped.
When a goalkeeper puts a goalkeeper's glove onto one of his two hands, he first pulls the glove over one hand so that the wrist cuff is on his wrist. He then grips the end piece of the strap with the fingers of the other hand and places the strap under tension around the wrist cuff, during which the thumb of the other hand grips the outside of the end piece of the strap. The fingers of this other hand are either still exposed, i.e. ungloved, or are covered by the fingers of the other glove.
In a known goalkeeper's glove of the initially mentioned type, the trim of the end piece is part of an overall trim extending over the entire length of the strap, the profiling of the end piece of the overall trim being a decorative impression which is relatively finely formed and of shallow depth. The outer surface to be gripped, associated with the decorative impression, is not only smooth and flat in itself, but also made of a slippery material. When the fingers gripping the end piece pull on the strap, the thumb easily slips on the embossed, slippery exterior, in particular when the thumb of the hand pulling the strap is covered by the thumb of a goalkeeper's glove.
/ Therefore, an object of the invention is to provide a glove of the initially mentioned type in which the exposed or the covered thumb of the other hand pulling the strap has a better grip on the outside of the strap and is better safeguarded against slipping. To achieve this object, the glove according to the invention is characterized in that the trim of the end piece comprises an independent, separately attached shaped part which forms a thumb recess as profiling on the outside and, in the direction of the free end of the strap, a stop projection, the outer surface of which is made of a non-slip material.
In the glove according to the invention, the thumb of the pulling or gripping hand is better safeguarded against slipping off the outside of the end piece of the strap, on the one hand by the thumb recess provided together with the stop projection, and on the other hand by the non-slip material of the outer surface to be gripped. The anti-slip property is increased or improved both when gripping with an exposed thumb and when gripping with a gloved thumb. The thumb recess is large enough for insertion of part of the tip of the exposed or the gloved thumb. Outer surfaces of non-slip material are known in goalkeeper's gloves, in which they are formed e.g. by a latex layer on the inner-hand part of the overall goalkeeper's glove.
It is particularly expedient and advantageous if the thumb recess, on the side opposite the stop projection, is open and free of a surround towards the outside of the strap. The gripping thumb can easily be placed into the thumb recess.
It is also particularly expedient and advantageous if the thumb recess is provided with a surround, the height of which, measured from a base region, increases towards the side of the thumb recess nearer the free
end of the strap. In practice, the surround only has a significant height where it forms the stop projection.
It is particularly expedient and advantageous if the material of the shaped part is elastically resilient. The shaped part need not therefore be a rigid hard structure, thereby preventing injuries caused to other players by the glove. The material can be sufficiently flexible to avoid any risk of injury by the shaped part.
It is further particularly expedient and advantageous if an additional trim provided on the outside of the strap forms a hole into which the shaped part is inserted, and the perforated marginal strip is also secured by the seam securing the shaped part. The addition of the shaped part adds only slightly to the cost of manufacturing the rest of the glove. The hole is produced at the same time as the remainder of the additional trim, and the perforated marginal strip is also secured by the seam securing the shaped part.
The material of the shaped part can be e.g. a rubber. However, it is particularly expedient and advantageous if the material of the shaped part is an elastomeric plastic. An elastomeric plastic suitable for the present purpose is easily obtainable.
It is also particularly expedient and advantageous if a hook-and-loop fastener is provided on the side of the end piece of the strap opposite the shaped part. This gives the fingers, which take hold of the strap together with the thumb, better grip.
It is likewise particularly expedient and advantageous if the material of the shaped part and the material of the trim surrounding the shaped part are different from one another. This clearly shows the material
structure of the shaped part, for which surface properties are important. The shaped part is applied e.g. by injection-moulding or gluing.
According to a particularly expedient and advantageous embodiment of the invention, the shaped part is stitched on. Stitching is simple from the point of view of manufacture and is sufficiently secure.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing, wherein: Fig. 1 shows an end view of the cuff end of a goalkeeper's glove with a strap; Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the strap of the goalkeeper's glove according to Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale in relation thereto; and Fig. 3 shows a section along the line III-III in Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale in relation thereto.
The goalkeeper's glove according to the drawings comprises an outer-
hand part and an inner-hand part which define a back region, a palm region and finger regions and to which a thumb region and a wrist cuff 1 are attached - only the wrist cuff 1 is shown. The wrist cuff 1 is circumferentially closed, forms a so-called flat seam 2 and is elastically extensible in the longitudinal direction in order to adapt to wrists of different sizes. One end of a strap 4 is stitched to the wrist cuff 1 at a point 3 associated with the inner-hand part, the left-hand side of the strap 4 as seen in Fig. 2 being the side closer to the fingers of the glove.
The strap 4 can be placed around the wrist cuff 1 and ends with its free end just short of the seam 3. The wrist cuff 1 is provided with hook-
and-loop fasteners 5, 6 in two separate regions.
The strap 4 substantially comprises an embossed trim 7, a strip-type hookand-loop fastener 8 and a shaped part 11. The hook-and-loop fastener 8 comprises a base layer 9 and a hooked layer 10 and extends over the entire surface of the strap 4 and the base layer 9 imparts to the strap 4 resistance to tensile forces. The embossed trim 7 extends over the entire surface of the strap 4 - apart from the region of the shaped part 11 - and likewise imparts to the strap 4 resistance to tensile forces.
The embossed trim is made of a plastic, is provided on the outside with a profiled decorative impression 12, and is connected to the hook-and-
loop fastener 8 by means of a seam 13 along the shaped edge.
The strap 4 forms a free end piece 14, in which the embossed trim 7 is provided with a hole 15 out of which the shaped part 11 projects. The shaped part 11 forms a marginal strip all round the hole 15, which marginal strip extends below a marginal strip of the embossed trim 7 defining the hole 15 and is connected to the marginal strip of the embossed trim 7 and to the hook-and-loop fastener 8 by a seam 16.
The shaped part 11 forms a base region 17 of which the stitched marginal strip is a continuation. On this base region 17 is formed a horseshoeshaped surround 18 which surrounds a thumb recess 19, forms an elevated stop projection 20 on a central region and is open on the opposite side 21.
