Abstract

A fixing for securing an abrasion resistant tile to ductwork, which fixing comprises a head and a shank, characterized in that at least part of said head is provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material. An abrasion resistant tile for lining ductwork, which abrasion resistant tile comprises a base layer (typically of steel) provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material and a bore passing therethrough, characterized by a reinforcing plate secured to said base layer and having a hole therethrough to accommodate the shank of a fixing.

Abrasion Resistant Tiles for lining Ductwork and Fixing therefor This invention relates to a fixing for securing an abrasion resistant tile to ductwork, an abrasion resistant tile for lining ductwork, an abrasion resistant unit for lining ductwork, and ductwork when lined with said abrasion resistant unit.
Many engineering processes involve passing an abrasive material through a duct. Typically such processes are found in the coke and steel making industries and in the chemical engineering industry.
In order to increase the longevity of the ductwork it is common to line the ductwork, which is typically made of mild steel, with abrasion resistant tiles. Typically such abrasion resistant tiles comprise a 12mm thickness of mild steel covered with a 7mm thick layer of hardfacing comprising an abrasion resistant alloy.
The abrasion resistant tiles, which are typically squares having a side between 150mm and 300mm, are each individually attached to the ductwork by a steel fixing the head of which is accommodated in a countersink in the abrasion resistant tile and the shank of which passes through a bore in the remainder of the abrasion resistant tile and projects from the back thereof. In use, the shank is passed through a hole in the ductwork which is to be lined and held in place by a fixing.
Whilst such abrasion resistant tiles do indeed increase the longevity of the ductwork it is not unusual to find that isolated abrasion resistant tiles become dislodged from the ductwork long before the abrasion resistant material has been worn away. It is a matter of conjecture why these abrasion resistant tiles become dislodged.
The present invention aims to reduce this problem in two ways.
Firstly, the present invention provides a fixing for securing an abrasion resistant tile to ductwork, which

fixing comprises a head and a shank, characterized in that at least part of said head is provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material.
Preferably said head is of rectangular section to inhibit rotation thereof relative to an abrasion resistant tile.
Advantageously, the head of said fixing is of square section. The side of such square section may typically be from 25mm to 35mm with 30mm to 32mm being preferred.
Preferably, the abrasion resistant layer on the fixing will be substantially the same thickness as the thickness of the abrasion resistant layer on the abrasion resistant tile, i. e. typically of the order of 6 to 20 mm. In order to accommodate such a fixing the abrasion resistant plate must be provided with a suitably deep bore which extends into the abrasion resistant plate sufficient to accommodate both the abrasion resistant layer on the fixing and the thickness of the head of the fixing itself. This can leave a situation where any residual metal is unacceptably thin.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided an abrasion resistant tile for lining ductwork, which abrasion resistant tile comprises a base layer (typically of steel) provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material and a bore passing therethrough, characterized by a reinforcing plate secured to said base layer and having a hole therethrough to accommodate the shank of a fixing.
The plate may cover the entire, or substantially the entire, surface of the base layer. However, the plate preferably covers only the bore and a small area therearound. In this case one or more standoffs are preferably provided adjacent the perimeter of the abrasion resistant tile to allow the abrasion resistant tile to sit comfortably on the ductwork.
The plate may conveniently be welded to the base layer.

The bore may be of circular cross-section. However, it is preferably of a non-circular cross-section and may be, for example of rectangular or square section.
Preferably, the bore is of uniform cross-section and passes through the entire thickness of said abrasion resistant layer and said base layer. This facilitates manufacture.
In order to reduce noise the base layer may be provided with a layer of acoustic damping material, for example a resilient elastomeric material such as rubber with a thickness of typically 3mm to 10mm.
The present invention also provides an abrasion resistant unit which comprises an abrasion resistant tile in accordance with the present invention provided with a fixing in accordance with the present invention.
Preferably, the thickness of the abrasion resistant material on the head of the fixing is substantially the same as the thickness of abrasion resistant material on said base layer of said abrasion resistant tile.
The present invention also provides ductwork when line with one or more abrasion resistant units in accordance with the present invention.

For a better understanding of the present invention reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which :- Figure 1 is a section through a fixing in accordance with the present invention ; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the fixing shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a front view of one embodiment of an abrasion resistant tile in accordance with the present invention; Figure 4 is a cross-section taken on line IV-IV of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a view, similar to that of Figure 4, but of a second embodiment of an abrasion resistant tile in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings there is shown a fixing which is generally identified by the reference numeral 1.
The fixing 1 is made of mild steel and comprises a head 2 and a shank 3. The head 2, which is about 12mm in thickness, is covered with a layer of abrasion resistant material 4 which is about 7mm in thickness.
The abrasion resistant material comprises a chromium carbide alloy sold under the Trademark Triten T200X which is stud welded to the head 2.
The shank 3 is provided with a thread 5.
As can be seen from Figure 1, the head is of square section and has a side of approximately 32mm. In this embodiment the head is made from the same material as the tile of wear resistant material 4 and is attached to the shank 3 by drawn arc stud welding.
Turning now to Figures 3 and 4, there is shown An abrasion resistant tile which is generally identified by the reference numeral 11. As can be seen from Figure 4, the abrasion resistant tile 11 comprises a base layer 12 of mild steel about 12mm in thickness covered with a layer 13 of abrasion resistant material about 7mm in

thickness and which has been bulk welded to the base layer 12.
A plate 14 of mild steel is welded to the base layer 12 and is provided with a hole 15 to accommodate the shank 3 of the fixing 1.
Four stand-offs 16,17, 18 and 19 are welded to the base layer 12 adjacent the corners thereof.
In use, the shank 3 of the fixing 1 is inserted into the hole 15 until the bottom of the head 2 engages the plate 14. In this position the top of the abrasion resistant layer 4 is substantially flush with the surface of the abrasion resistant tile 11. There is a small clearance between the perimeter of the head 2 of the fixing 1 and a bore 20 of square cross-section which extends through both the base layer 12 and the abrasion resistant layer 13 of the abrasion resistant tile 11. The bore 20 is conveniently cut using a precision plasma-arc.
The shank 3 is then passed through a hole in the ducting (not shown) to be lined and is secured thereto by means of a shank-proof washer and a nut (not shown). The stand-offs 16, 17, 18 and 19 help ensure that the abrasion resistant tile 11 sits comfortably on the ductwork.
Preliminary tests have shown that the abrasion resistant unit formed by the fixing 1 and the abrasion resistant tile 11 do not fail prematurely with the result that the time between major overhauls of the ductwork can be safely extended.
Figure 5 shows an abrasion resistant tile which is generally similar to the abrasion resistant tile 11.
Parts having similar functions have been identified by the same reference numerals but in the'20'series.
The only difference is that the stand-offs 16,17, 18 and 19 have been omitted and the base layer 22 is provided with a layer 30 of a sound deadening material 22. The sound deadening material is typically from? ? mm to? ? mm thick and may comprise, for example a high

density rubber. This can significantly reduce noise levels in chutes whilst providing additional impact absorption at transfer points and similar high impact areas.
Various modifications to the embodiments described are envisaged, for example the layer 30 could comprise a heat resisting material and/or a thermally insulating material.
Abrasion resistant units in accordance with the present invention find utility in lining all forms of ductwork including chutes, hoppers and pan mixers (large concrete mixers). They may also be used for protecting drag lines and loading buckets.
If desired, after a fixing has been inserted into an abrasion resistant tile a rubber grommet may be rolled down the shank of the fixing to inhibit separation of the fixing from the abrasion resistant tile. Such a grommet may also serve to inhibit galvanic reaction between the abrasion resistant tile and the fixing.

Claims (14)

  1. Claims :- 1. A fixing for securing an abrasion resistant tile to ductwork, which fixing comprises a head and a shank, characterized in that at least part of said head is provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material.
  2. 2. A fixing as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said head is of rectangular section to inhibit rotation thereof relative to an abrasion resistant tile.
  3. 3. A fixing as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, having a head of of square section.
  4. 4. A fixing as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the side of said square section is from 25mm to 35mm.
  5. 5. An abrasion resistant tile for lining ductwork, which abrasion resistant tile comprises a base layer provided with a layer of abrasion resistant material and a bore passing therethrough, characterized by a reinforcing plate secured to said base layer and having a hole therethrough to accommodate the shank of a fixing.
  6. 6. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in Claim 5, wherein said plate covers substantially the entire surface of said base layer.
  7. 7. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in Claim 5, wherein said plate covers only the bore and a small area therearound.
  8. 8. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in Claim 5,6 or 7, wherein said plate is welded to the base layer.
  9. 9. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in Claim 5,6, 7 or 8, wherein said bore is of non-circular section.
  10. 10. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in any of Claims 5 to 9, wherein said bore is of substantially uniform cross-section.
  11. 11. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in any of Claims 5 to 10, including one or more standoffs to allow the abrasion resistant tile to, in use, sit comfortably on the ductwork.
  12. 12. An abrasion resistant tile as claimed in any of Claims 5 to 10, wherein said base layer is provided with

    a layer of acoustic damping material.
  13. 13. An abrasion resistant unit for lining ductwork, which abrasion resistant unit comprises an abrasion resistant tile as claimed in any of Claims 5 to 12, and a fixing as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4.
    14, An abrasion resistant unit as claimed in Claim 13, wherein the thickness of abrasion resistant material on the head of said fixing is substantially the same as the thickness of abrasion resistant material on said base layer of said abrasion resistant tile.
