Abstract

The former is of disc form, being rotatable, and is of plastics, having a unique form on its outside diameter blending into angles on its sides. It is manufactured in four different widths and four different outside diameter sizes and fits onto a holder, which in turn slides onto a folding machine shaft replacing original equipment supplied when purchased. The former will allow stock to be fed through at high production speeds, with minimal damage to the stock being processed, and has the ability to produce in excess of 5 million creases before replacement may become necessary.

TITLE : Creasing "FORMER" DESCRIPTION : Technical Field This "FORMER" is relative to the creasing of paper or card prior to its folding.
Background: A large amount of printed stock needs to be creased prior to the next operation of folding can be carried out.
Existing methods of creasing involve feeding the stock to be worked between an upper roller and either a single or pair of lower rollers. A metal disc, soft rubber "0" rings or rubber washers (all called discs during this text) are affixed to the upper roller and project a small amount radially outwards around the diameter of the roller. In method "1" (see Drawings) the female rollers are spaced on the machines lower shaft to create a small gap which needs to be aligned with the upper rollers disc. In methods "2" a single roller with varying width grooves is placed on the machines lower shaft, the same alignment as stated with method 1"is used. When the upper and lower rollers are counter-rotated the paper is then passed between the two and the projection of the disc on the upper shaft forces the stock into the selected gap or groove on the lower shaft to form the required crease. This method has the disadvantage of a metal disc damaging the stock (tearing at the edges) and the rubber "0" rings or washer (not
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
being sufficiently strong enough to cope effectively with thicker stock).
Summary of the Invention : The invention is a creasing FORMER and holder. The FORMER itself is a direct replacement to that of the metal disc with the exception of being manufactured from specially formulated aviation plastic which has a uniquely formed radius on its outside diameter blending into angles on both its sides. The "FORMERS" are manufactured in 4 sizes, the outside diameters and widths being slightly different on each size. When fitted to the holder and placed on the machines top shaft and aligned with whichever method of roller set-up is selected on the machines lower shaft.
A sheet of the stock that requires creasing is fed between the rollers the crease is then formed. According to the present methods used as described in the"Background"some can be eliminated. The male roller normally used on the machines top roller can be replaced by the invention and its holder, this will, once set in the appropriate way will enable quantities in excess of 5 million to be produced before any possible changes to the former need to be considered. The use of the specially formulated aviation plastic with its uniqely produced is are far more gentle than the metal discs (little or no tearing) and produce more copies than soft rubber, thus allowing continuous production from start to finish.
