Abstract

A personal wrist-mounted speedometer in the form of a wristwatch component 10 uses GPS signals to calculate the speed of the user. The GPS receiver is housed either within the wristwatch component 10 or externally in a separate unit 12 which may be carried in the hand or pocket of the user. When externally arranged, the GPS receiver uses radio communication to transfer data to the wristwatch component 10, which uses an LCD display screen 19 to display the relevant speed in either numeric 16 or dial 18 formats.

Description

Universal wrist-mounted Sports Speedometer This invention relates to an electronic, wrist-mounted sports speedometer that will measure speed over land, sea or in the air.
The speedometer is a very well known device capable of calculating speed either electronically or mechanically. Speedometers must of necessity use a stationary medium from which to calculate their speed. In a car for example the wheels roll over a stationary road to calculate speed relative to the ground. Like wise, most aeroplanes or boats will measure their speed relative to the medium they are in. To do this they use a small impeller that spins as the medium flows over it, the speed of rotation is measured and converted into a speed reading.
These methods of measuring speed are however impractical for humans who may wish to measure their personal speed whilst skiing, windsurfing, jogging, cycling or any other sport where speed is a concern.
According to the present invention there is provided a wrist-mounted speedometer comprising a wristwatch and separate GPS (Global Positioning System) module which communicates with the wristwatch using a miniature radio transmitter and receiver. The GPS module is placed in the hand or the pocket of the user. The GPS module is capable of calculating speed relative to the stationary satellites held within the earth's orbit. The current speed calculated within the GPS module is sent via a radio transmitter and receiver to the wristwatch which in turn displays the current speed by means of a LCD (liquid crystal display) screen. The speed is displayed on this screen using numeric digits and a speed dial. The wristwatch is updated with new information every 0.2 seconds to provide the user with an accurate speed reading.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the wristwatch and GPS module : Figure 2 illustrates shows how the invention would be used; and Figure 3 shows how the liquid crystal display screen displays speed information to the user.
Referring to the drawing the personal sports speedometer comprises a wristwatch 10 and a GPS module 12 in the form of a small plastic box container.
The GPS module is placed in a jacket or trouser pocket with the ceramic flat aerial 13 facing away from the user. The watch is then mounted on either the left or the right hand wrist using the elasticated strap 20. Using the switch 14 on the GPS module the wristwatch is automatically activated and will start to receive speed information immediately.
The wristwatch also houses software that calculates distance travelled over a set period of use. This function is selected by pressing a button 15 at the base of the display screen 19. The speed is displayed on the screen using the numeric digits 16 and the dial 17 which in Figure 3 is illustrated registering 18mph. Speed is measured in both miles per hour and kilometres an hour, this function is selected by pressing the button 18 above the screen.
