Clutches and speedvarying mechanism.- An hydraulic variablespeed gear, of the type described in Specifica. tion 13864/06, comprises an impeller 3 on the driving-shaft 1, and a vaned wheel 4 on the driven shaft 2 enclosed in a casing 5 connected to a cylinder 10, so that by withdrawing a piston 11, operating liquid, which may be mercury, is withdrawn from the casing and no drive is transmitted.
