Balancing moving parts.-In turbines comprising an impulse section b or a section working with a slight degree of reaction, and also a reaction section a through which the motive fluid flows in an opposite direction to that in the section b, the total end-thrust is balanced by a suitable enlargement of the stuffing-box diameters within the section b. Thus, the diameter d<2> of the first intermediate stuffing-box is made larger than the diameter d' of the outer stuffing-box e, and the diameter d' is made larger than the diameter d<2>. The diameters decrease again towards the outer stuffing-box g, which may be of the same diameter as the stuffing-box e. Alternatively, the inner stuffing-boxes may have the same diameter, while the box e is given a smaller diameter than the box g. A small thrust bearing may be added to take up thrust due to varying load.
