Description
A DISPLAY BOARD
The invention relates to a display board and particularly although not exclusively limited to a display board for displaying advertising material.
It is known to provide display boards which carry advertising material. An example of such a board might be one used in a public house to display advertising material relating to a promotion. Such boards generally comprise a display body and support. The display body is generally made from strong card and the support generally comprises a further piece of card attached for example by gluing to the rear of the board and extending transversely therefrom to prop the board up.
Although such boards appear to be simple the manufacture of the boards can be complicated in that the support piece of card must be secured on the rear of the body at precisely the correct position in order for the support to function properly. In addition, the support part is generally irregularly shaped and thus material wastage can occur.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of display board.
According to the invention there is provided a display board comprising a display body having a base, a front surface and a rear surface, and a support, the support comprising a piece of material extending from the base of the display body, the other end of the piece of material being secured to the rear surface of the display body at a position spaced from the base, the piece of material having a first fold extending across the width thereof located between the base and the secured end and a second fold extending across the width thereof located between the base and the first fold, whereby folding of the piece of material into a support position about the second fold towards the secured end of the piece provides two support legs, the support further comprising retaining means for retaining the support in the support position.
Preferably the piece of material comprising the support is integral with the display body. Most preferably, the display body and support comprise a single elongate sheet of material.
In that way material wastage is minimised.
Preferably the secured end of the piece of material defining the support is secured to the display body by gluing.
The piece of material defining the support is divided into first, second and third sections. The first section is defined between the first fold and the secured end, the second section is defined between the first and second folds and the third section is defined between the second fold and the base of the display body.
The retaining means preferably comprises a first formation on the first section and a second formation formed on the third section. Most preferably the retaining means comprises a first formation on the first section and a second co-operating formation on the line of the second fold.
The formation on the first section is preferably a slot and the formation on the fold line or on the second section is preferably a tab. Of course, they could be arranged the other way round. Preferably the tab includes a small slot and the slot includes a small projecting tab which is arranged to be received in the slot in the large tab. That arrangement ensures positive locking of the retaining means preventing the display board inadvertently returning to its transit position.
Display board in accordance with the invention will now be described in detail by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a display board in accordance with the invention showing the retaining means,
FIG. 2 is a plan view of a blank piece of material for folding into the display board as shown in FIG. l, FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the display board just moved out of its transit position,
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the display board of FIGS. 1-3 showing the next stage in the assembly of the display board,
FIG. 5 is a perspective view from the rear of the display board of FIGS. 3 and 4.
In FIGS. I and 2 a display board 10 for displaying advertising material comprises a display body 12 which carries the advertising material and a support assembly 14 which supports the display body 12 in an upright manner so that the display board is free-standing.
As can be seen in FIG. 2, the display board 10 comprises a single sheet of material with fold lines defined thereon. The display body 12 comprises an elongate display part 16 and a backing part 18 which share a common longitudinal edge 17.
The backing part 18 has a strip of adhesive 20 arranged adjacent the longitudinal edge thereof spaced from the display part 16. As can be seen in FIG. 1, the backing part 18 is folded so that it lies against the rear surface of the display part 16 and the display and backing part 16,18 are adhered together by means of the adhesive strip 20.
The support assembly 14 is also formed from the same sheet of material as the display body 12. The support assembly 14 comprises an elongate sheet of material which shares a common short edge 21 with the display part 16 of the display body 12.
The elongate piece of material 22 forming the support assembly 14 has a first fold line 24 defined adjacent a free end thereof, a second fold line 26 defined generally centrally of the elongate piece 22 and extending across the width thereof and a third fold line 28 defined across the width of the elongate piece 22 between the second fold line 26 and the common short edge 21. The fold lines 24,26, 28 and the common edge 21 define four sections of the elongate piece of material. The first section 30 extends from the first fold line 24 to the free end of the sheet of the material 22. The first section 30 has the tips of the two free comers removed ai'd an adhesive strip 31 is arranged thereon. The second section 32 is defined first and second fold lines 24,26, the third section 34 is defined between the second and third fold lines 26 and 28 and a fourth section 36 is defined between the third fold line 28 and the common edge 21 of the display section 16.
A retaining slot 38 is formed in the second section 32 extending parallel to the fold lines 24,26 and arranged at a distance from the fold line 26 substantially equal to the distance between the fold lines 26 and 28. A locking tab 40 projects into the slot centrally thereof. A retaining tab 42 is cut out from part of the second section 34 along the third fold line 28. A locking slot 44 is formed centrally of the body of the retaining tab 42. The retaining tab 42 is just smaller in length than the length of the retaining slot 38.
As can be seen from FIG. 1, the first section 30 is adhered to the backing part 18 of the display body 12 at a position between the middle of the backing part 18 and the base thereof.
FIGS. 3-5 illustrate the assembly of the display board 10 from the transit position in which the board is folded flat to an operative position in which the support assembly 14 supports the display body 12 in an upright free-standing manner.
In FIG. 3 the display board 10 is shown laying flat with the backing part 18 uppermost. The support assembly 14 is shown just moved out of the transit position. In the transit position the support assembly 14 lies flat. In order to assemble the support assembly 14 into the operative position, the fourth section 36 is folded upwardly towards the top of the display board 10. The retaining tab 42 is pulled out from its transit position in which it lies flush in the plane of the third section 34. The retaining tab 42 is arranged to extend in a substantially coplanar manner with the fourth section 36. The fourth section 36 is folded further towards the top of the display board 10 to the point where the third section 34 lies substantially flush against the second section 32 and the third fold line 28 extends across and co-linearly with the retaining slot 38. The retaining tab 42 is then arranged so that it extends through the retaining slot 38. The retaining tab 42 is pushed through the retaining slot 38 until the locking tab 40 in the retaining slot 38 engages into the locking slot 44 in the retaining tab 42. The retaining tab 42 and slot 38 are intended to retain the support assembly 14 in the operative position and the locking tab 40 in slot 44 lock the retaining slot and tab in the operative position and prevent inadvertent collapse of the support assembly 14. As can be seen in
FIG. 4, when the support 14 is in the operative position, the support assembly 14 defines two"legs"which are respectively formed by second and third sections 32, 34 and the fourth section 36 and backing part 18. The"feet"of the"legs"are parallel with one another and spaced apart which provides a stable support for the display board 10. The fold lines 24,26, 28 and the sections 30,32, 34 and 36 together with the dimensions and relative spacing of the retaining slot and tab means that the support assembly 14 is arranged under stress in the operative position. The second section 32 is arranged in tension and the fourth section 36 in compression.
The pre-stressing of the support assembly 14 in the operative position renders the support assembly 14 rigid and provides greater structural stability to the assembly in the operative position.
Although the above invention has been described in relation to a display board for advertising material, the display board could equally be used to display other material, for example the attachment of a frame part to the front of the board to allow the display board to display photographs and so the display board could be used as a photograph or picture frame.
The display board is preferably made from cardboard, most preferably corrugated cardboard. Alternatively a plastics material, for example a corrugated plastics material, could be used.
