Abstract

A midsole is curved across its width and allows for flexibility in one direction and rigidity in the other. The midsole, aims to reduce deformation of the foot when a ball is struck by providing rigidity in a soccer shoe by the introduction of a flexible but rigid midsole. The midsole provides flexibility to allow comfortable normal movement and rigidity to provide strength and power when a ball is struck.

Description

DESCRIPTION An area of arguement in soccer shoe design is the need for a shoe which is both flexible a rigid. Flexibility provides comfort and normal foot movement. Rigidity provides strength and power through reduced deformation of the foot during ball strike.
The introduction of a curved midsole allows flexibility in one direction and rigidity in the other.
This theory works in much the same way as if you were to bend a sheet of paper or card along its length. If you hold it at the bottom and curl it slightly it will bend towards you but not away.
See Fig 1
