Abstract

236,722. Terry, A. V. June 27, 1924. Pliers.-A valve-spring lifting-tool, of the type wherein a pair of jaws are opened and closed in parallel movement by toggle or crossed link action, comprises a pair of parallel jaw members, crossed links connected to the jaw members, and a pair of operating handles in the form of extensions of the crossed links. The parallel jaw members a<1>, b<1> are connected together by the cross links d, e, pivoted together at f and having rearward extensions constituting operating handles d<1>, e<1>. The sheet metal of the jaw members is twisted at the front into a plane at right angles to provide two jaws a, b, one slotted at a<2> and the other bevelled at b<2>, and adapted when the handles are wide open to be forced between the valve tappet and the seating k<1> of the valve-spring k. Stop pins b<3> are provided on the jaw b. The forward ends of the crossed links d, e are pivoted to the jaw members at g, g<1>, and their rear ends carry pins h, h<1> engaging slots a<4>, b<4> in the jaw members. A locking- catch i is pivoted at g<1> and is provided with a slot i<2> having a series of notches i<3> adapted to engage automatically with the pin h<1> under the influence of the spring j for holding the valvespring in the compressed condition.
