Abstract

A bollard or sign consists of a plastics body 1 with a metal or other rigid insert 11 mounted in a recess 7. The insert is installed immediately after moulding and is held securely by its periphery 9,10 as the plastics body shrinks during cooling. The insert 11 may carry an adhesively secured signage sheet 12, which can be affixed before or after insertion. The insert 11 may also include additional location features to ensure it is correctly oriented at assembly.

Description

Bollards and Other Road Furniture Technical Field and Background Art The present invention relates to bollards, signs, posts and similar road articles which conventionally carry factual information or data such as warnings, instructions, directions and indications. Such articles are collectively commonly referred to as road furniture.
The invention was primarily developed to facilitate and improve the manufacture of road bollards of the kind comprising a plastics moulded body which carries indicia (it is to be realised however that the invention is not intended to be restricted to bollard manufacture and may be used, with advantage, in the manufacture of a wide range of road furniture).
Conventionally road bollards are manufactured with a plastics body or housing that is injection or rotationally moulded. To this plastics moulded body is then applied an adhesive sheet printed with indicia or data appropriate for the bollard. It is recognised within the road furniture industry that indicia sheets adhesively applied directly to the plastics of a housing or body have poor retentive properties. To overcome this problem it has been proposed to provide on the plastics body or housing a plate of metal or other material to which a sheet with required indicia or data can reliably be secured by adhesive. With such an assembly the plates are conventionally secured to the plastics body of a bollard (or other road furniture) by screws, rivets or other mechanical fixings which are considered to be both inconvenient and relatively expensive to apply. Also, mechanical fixings can damage the integrity of the plastics structure. It is an object of the present invention to provide a road furniture assembly such as a bollard and a method of manufacturing road furniture which alleviates the disadvantages discussed above and will provide for both convenient and economically viable manufacture.
Statements of Invention and Advantages According to the present invention there is provided a road furniture assembly comprising a plastics moulded body and an indicia member secured to the body by shrinkage of the plastics material of the body on to that member.
Further according to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing road furniture which comprises heating plastics material and moulding a body therewith and applying an indicia member to the moulded plastics body so that shrinkage of the plastics of the body onto the indicia member secures that member to the body.
The plastics moulded body will typically be, or comprise part of, a housing for a bollard although, as previously mentioned, the invention may be applied with advantage to the manufacture of road furniture other than bollards which include an indicia member that is to carry indicia or data. By securing the indicia member to the plastics moulded body by shrinkage as that body cools from the mould, it will be appreciated that the use of mechanical fixings is avoided with associated savings in costs and ensuring that the integrity of the moulded plastics is not disrupted.
The indicia member will typically have applied to it an adhesive facia sheet which may provide protection for that member and/or be printed with indicia data or information. To provide a good receptive service to the adhesive sheet it is preferred that the indicia member is of a non-plastics material, more preferably a metal such as steel or aluminium.
It is to be appreciated however that the indicia member may be of plastics, for example where that member is of a different colour plastics to that of the moulded body and the colour of the plastics may itself be informative (for example where a bollard housing has two indicia members one on each of opposed side faces), one indicia member being in red plastics and the other in white plastics to provide an indication of priority for traffic flow through or over traffic calming measures adjacent to the bollard. The indicia member may also be embossed with data or information appropriate for the road furniture.
Where the indicia member is provided with a facia sheet that is adhesively secured to that member, it is preferred that the sheet is secured to the indicia member prior to that member being applied to the plastics moulded body to secure it thereto by shrinkage of the plastics material. With this latter technique there may be an advantage for the orientation of the indicia member to be adjustable relative to the moulded body to a position appropriate for presentation of the information (such as a directional arrow) on the facia sheet prior to the plastics shrinking sufficiently to firmly secure the indicia member. With conventionally constructed bollards it is usual for the facia sheet to be adhesively applied to the metal plate subsequent to that plate having been screwed or rivetted to the plastics body of the bollard; as a consequence it is not unusual for the facia sheet to be positioned out of alignment or inappropriately orientated on the bollard with consequential inconvenience and cost of having to remove the sheet and apply a new one.
Preferably the indicia member is in the form of a plate which will typically be secured to the body by shrinkage of the plastics material of the body onto the peripheral edge of the plate. In a preferred arrangement the indicia member is circular and is accommodated and retained by shrinkage to a circular seating of the body member. The seating will usually be complementary in size to the indicia member with the latter sitting on or in the seating. With a circular indicia member and seating, location means (conveniently in the form of a cooperating projection and recess) maybe provided between the body and the indicia member for determining a required orientation between the circular indicia member and the circular seating of the body. Use of such location means is particularly convenient where the indicia member has its indicia data or information formed integral with that member (for example by embossing or otherwise) so that the indicia can quickly be orientated relative to the housing or body and also where a facia sheet carrying the appropriate indicia is accurately applied to the indicia member in a required orientation relative to the location means prior to the indicia member being secured to the plastics body.
From the afore-going it will be appreciated that an indicia member can quickly and conveniently be applied and secured to the plastics body of an article of road furniture as that body is removed from its mould and allowed to cool. There is an added convenience that any data or indicia on the applied indicia member may be selected from several such members having different colours, data or information.
Drawings An embodiment of a road furniture assembly in the form of a bollard constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying illustrative drawings in which: Figure 1-is a perspective view of a plastics moulded housing in the form of a head for the bollard, and Figure 2-is a section of the head shown in Figure 1 taken on the line II-II and diagrammatically illustrates the fitment to the head of indicia plates and facia sheeting.
Detailed Description of Drawings A bollard is formed with a hollow head component 1 having a cylindrical neck 2 which presents a spigot that is received in a complementary socket of an upstanding main bollard body (not shown) both of which will be moulded in plastics. The neck 2 has an annular external rib 3 which engages in an annular recess in the wall of the socket of the main body to retain the head and main body coupled together in a manner well known for bollard assemblies. The head 1 has a front face 4 and a rear face 5 which are to carry indicia, typically in the form of arrows as directional indicators for road traffic. Each of the front and rear faces 4 and 5 is provided with a shallow cylindrical recess 6 in the bottom face 6 of each of which recess is located a concentric annular recess 7.
The annular recesses 7 and shallow cylindrical recesses 6 in the faces 4 and 5 of the head 1 provide seatings for circular indicia plates 8 and 8A for the front face 4 and the rear face 5 respectively. Each of the plates 8 and 8A is formed as a steel spinning or pressing and has an annular flange 9 that is generally L-shaped in radial section to present an outwardly directed annular foot portion 10.
The hollow head 1 is formed in plastics material by rotational or injection moulding in a conventional manner within a heated moulding tool. Following the moulding operation the hot plastics head 1 is wholly or partially removed from the moulding tool to expose its faces 4 and 5. In this condition the head presents its annular recesses 7 with an external diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the indicia plate 8 across its outwardly directed annular foot portion 10. An operative now press fits the circular indicia plates 8 and 8A with their respective feet portions 10 leading into the respective annular recesses 7 for the indicia plates to be received on the seatings presented by the shallow cylindrical recesses 6 and the annular recesses 7. The plastics moulded head is now allowed to cool and as it contracts it shrinks over the annular flange presented by the outwardly directed foot portions 10 to capture those foot portions and the annular flanges 9 of the indicia plates in the respective annular recesses 7 to securely retain the plates on the faces 4 and 5 of the bollard head.
For convenience of description the bollard head assembly constructed from the components shown in Figure 2 has two different forms of indicia plate. The plate 8 for the front face 4 presents a circular flat face 11 onto which is adhesively secured a circular facia sheet 12 printed with the indicia appropriate for the bollard (such as a directional arrow as previously mentioned). The indicia plate 8A shown for the rear face 5 is provided with a front face 11A that is embossed or otherwise integrally formed with indicia appropriate for the bollard.
The facia sheet 12 will usually be secured by adhesive to the flat face 11 of the plate 8 prior to that plate being fitted to the head housing 1 and secured by plastics shrinkage.
When the indicia plates 8 and 8A are initially fitted to the respective annular recesses 7 of the head and before the plastics material has cooled sufficiently to shrink and retain the respective plates, the annular plates may be rotated by an operative to slide the annular flange 9 along the annular recess 7. In this way indicia which may be carried by an plates 8 and 8A may be positioned in a desired orientation relative to the bollard head. Alternatively the indicia plates may be fitted directly onto their respective seatings in a predetermined orientation relative to the bollard head by engagement of location means between the bollard head and the respective indicia plates. The location means (not shown) is conveniently in the form of a projection moulded in the annular recess 7 which engages with a complimentary shaped recess or slot provided in the foot portion 10 of the indicia plate.
