Abstract

A portable door alarm,e.g. a temporarily installed intruder detection device, has an audible alarm emitter housed in a suitable container 1 which is activated by the extraction of a pin 4. The pin may be attached to a depression type door handle by a ring or loop 6 or to a hook 7 temporarily attached to the doorframe. Both the alarm and the hook are attached to the door or the doorframe by replaceable double-sided self-adhesive tape 3. For those already in possession of a personal alarm system, a conversion kit is proposed. The kit comprises a hinged container lined with foam which for all intents and purposes converts the personal alarm into a portable door alarm which can then be utilised in the way described above.

Description

-1 2366647 Portable Door Alarm This invention relates to a personal alarm
system.
Personal alarm systems have been in existence for some time whereby individuals concerned for their safety, typically women on their own, can carry with them a device which, when activated, emits a high-pitched highdecibel audible signal. The intention being that of scaring off an attacker whilst at the same time attracting attention to a potentially dangerous situation.
This invention takes the original concept and extends it to cover the fear that many people have when travelling, particularly abroad, that the door to their accommodation may not provide adequate security. The purpose of the device under these circumstances is to detect the door opening process, wake the traveller and at the same time scare off the intruder. The device cgp, of course be used in the home.
The device consists of an emitter, a means of securing the emitter on a temporary basis to a door, a switch for turning the emitter on and off which is effected by the removal or insertion of a pin, a chain linking the pin to either the door handle (if it is the depression type) or to the door frame in all other circumstances.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure I shows in perspective the emitter with switch pin inserted connected by a chain to a securing ring. The alternative securing mechanism of a self-adhesive hook is also shown.
Figure 2 shows in perspective the conversion kit to enable a personal alarm system to function as a portable door alarm.
Figure 3 illustrates the emitter temporarily attached to a door by means of self adhesive tape. The switch pin is in the inserted position and attached to the door handle by the linking chain.
Figure 4 illustrates the emitter temporarily attached to a door by means of self adhesive tape. The switch pin is in the extracted position by the process of the door handle being depressed. The audible alarm would as a consequence be sounding.
Figure 5 illustrates the emitter temporarily attached to a door by means of self adhesive tape. The switch pin is in the inserted position and attached to a hook temporarily attached to the door frame door by means of self adhesive tape.
Figure 6 illustrates the emitter temporarily attached to a door by means of self adhesive tape. The switch pin is in the extracted position by the process of the door being opened. The audible alarm would as a consequence be sounding.
Referring to the drawing at Figure 1, the alarm consists of an audible alarm emitter housed in a suitable container (1) with holes (2) through which a sound can emanate. The device is activated and switched off by the extraction and insertion of the pin (4), which is attached to a securing ring (6) by means of a light chain (5). The ring (6) can be secured either to a depression type door handle (see Figure 2) or to a hook (7) temporarily attached to the doorframe (see Figure 4).
Both the alarm and the hook are attached to the door and the doorframe by replaceable double-sided self-adhesive tape (3). After use, the old double sided tape can be pealed off and new lengths of tape applied to both the emitter and the hook if required.
For those already in possession of a personal alarm, a conversion kit is proposed. The kit comprising a hinged container (9) lined with foam (10) for securing the personal alarm (11) and a restraining panel (12) against which the switch end of the alarm will rest ensuring that the pin will be extracted cleanly.

Claims (5)

1. A portable door alarm comprising an emitter, a means of securing the emitter on a temporary basis to a door, a switch for turning the emitter on and off which is effected by the removal or insertion of a pin, a chain linking the pin to either the door handle (if it is the depression type) or to the door frame in all other circumstances.
2. A portable door alarm as claimed in Claim I wherein connection of the switch pin to a depression type door handle is effected by means of an adjustable loop.
3. A portable door alarm as claimed in Claim I wherein the attachment of the pin extension chain to the doorframe is effected by a temporary hook.
4. A portable door alarm as claimed in Claim I and Claim 3 wherein the attachment of the emitter and the hook to the door and the doorframe respectively is effected by means of replaceable double-sided selfadhesive tape.
5. A portable door alarm as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2 or Claim 3 or Claim 4 wherein the use of a personal alarm system is utilised by containment in an adapting case which for all intents and purposes then renders the personal alarm system a portable door alarm.
