Abstract

An article of footwear 1 comprises a base 2 and at least one upper 3A, 3B, wherein the upper is attached to the base by a plurality of press fasteners 4. Each fastener comprises a stud member 4A secured to the base and a corresponding socket member 6 mounted on the or each upper. Preferably, each socket member comprises a cap 7. The stud members may be mounted to the base by screws 5. A pair of left and right bases may be provided, each having at least two interchangeable sets of uppers.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> Title: Article of Footwear The present invention relates to an article of footwear.
It is known in prior published patent literature to provide an article of footwear with a base structure and a plurality of designs of removable uppers, whereby the look of the footwear can be changed by changing the uppers. It has been found that the releasable securement mechanism for attaching and removing each upper in the prior literature has design faults.
The invention seeks to provide an article of footwear which has an improved mechanism for releasably securing uppers to a base structure.
According to the present invention there is provided an article of footwear comprising: a) a base structure, b) at least one upper, said upper being secured to the base structure by a plurality of ring spring press fasteners of the type having a stud which is insertable into a socket housing a ring spring, each stud being secured directly into the base structure and each corresponding socket being mounted on an upper. Preferably each socket on an upper further comprises a decorative cap.
Preferably one or two uppers are provided for each base structure to make an article of footwear.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Preferably each stud is secured to the base structure by screws.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a perspective view with an inset of a ring spring fastener.
Referring to the drawing there is shown an article of footwear or shoe 1. Shoe 1 has a base structure 2 which may be formed of any suitable material such as plastics or wood as is well known in the art.
A pair of uppers are provided in the form of two sections of leather (or other fabric) 3A,313 which each extend from one side edge of the front of the base structure to an opposite side edge of the rear of the base structure.
Obviously a pair of "left" and "right" shoes I would be provided for a user.
The uppers are secured to the base structure by means of ring spring press fasteners. Each fastener has a stud 4 with a male projection 4A which is secured to the base structure by means of a screw 5.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Also each fastener has an annular female socket 6 with an internal ring spring to releasably receive the stud projection 4A. The socket is secured to the inner face of the upper by a decorative cap 7 (on the outer face of the upper) with a shaft 7A which passes though an aperture 8 in the upper. The fastener is of a type well known in the art and need not be described further. Each decorative cap 7 for each upper may be of a design to compliment the colour or design of . each upper.
It is envisaged that a user would purchase a pair of left and right base structures, and a number of sets of left and right uppers, each of different design. Each upper would have a plurality of sockets thereon which would match the position and/or number of at least some of the studs on a base member so that different sets of uppers could be applied the pair of base structures to change the look of the shoes. For example two or three sets of uppers could be sold with each pair of base structures, and also users could purchase additional sets of uppers separately.
Instead of a pair of uppers for each base structure in a pair of shoes, only one or more than two uppers could be provided for each base structure.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
