Abstract

A train 2 has a foam tanker 5 which is connected to carriages 10, such as carriages carrying lorries, by a fire proof pipe 6. In the event of a fire in one of the carriages heat sensors 7 will indicate this to the driver on a control panel 1, the driver will start an air pump 3 which will pressurise the tank, and then press a button on the control panel 1 to open a two way valve 8 in the appropriate carriage to force foam through sprayers 9.

Description

2364243 TUNNEL FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM The invention relates to the
recent fire which occurred in the Channel Tunnel. A lony caught fire on the lorry rail carriage. It took the Fire Brigade 30 minutes to reach the fire. During this time passengers were overcome by smoke and E300 million of damage was done to the Tunnel, not to mention lost of custom.
This invention will enable the Train Driver, or Guard, to extinguish the fire almost immediately.
At present, the car/coach carriages have water sprayers and the carriages are enclosed. The lorry carriages, however, are not enclosed thus the sprinkler system cannot be used.
The problem is being solved, at present, with the Fire Brigade being in the tunnel 24 hours.
The first three carriages are being left empty for the safety of the passengers.
How my Idea Would Work FiZ I shows the Engine, Foam Tank and carriage(s).
Fig 2 A carriage showing two way valves, foam pipe, sensors and foam sprayers.
Fig 3 Rear view of carriage, showing sensors, foam sprayers and a lorry on board.
Fig 4 Shows a two way valve.
Fig 5 Shows adjustable switch control box.
Heat sensor 7 is set off, it sends an alarm to the Driver/Guard flashing a light on control panel I which will show which carriage is on fire. The Driver/Guard would start pump 3 which would pressurise the foam tank 5. The Driver/Guard would then press relevant carriage button, closing the two way valve 8. A pressure gauge will show the Driver/Guard what the pressure is in the foam tank 5. Once the pressure required is reached the Driver/Guard can release the foam to the relevant carriage, forced through foam sprayers 9, thus extinguishing the fire.
If the fire does spread the foam can be redirected to whichever carraige is required, by use of control panel 1.
The adjustable switch I I enables carriages to be placed in any position on the line. A carriage can be removed from the line, for service or repair, but the system can still function.
This idea could be adapted for a long road tunnel.

Claims (1)

  1. Application No GBOO 13429.6 Claim The claim is the tunnel fire
extinguisher can Extinguish a fire on any individual carriage in a train being the first or last carriage by the two way valve in which it can be adjusted to come in to operation for the driver or guard to operate. Also it can be fitted permanently in a tunnel so any fire started in Any part of the tunnel can be extinguished To that part of the tunnel.
