Abstract

Lead suboxide mixed with some metallic lead is produced by placing pieces of lead in a rotary drum and passing in air &c. or other oxidizing gas while rotating the drum at about 25 revolutions per minute. The product is very light and reactive and is readily converted into lead monoxide by heating it locally, for instance by applying a lighted match to one point in a pile of the powder. Water or moisture reacts with it energetically, producing lead monoxide, hydroxide or the like. The lead monoxide may be converted into red lead by heating it in a furnace or pan at a temperature not exceeding 500 DEG C. Specifications 176,924, 198,647 and 215,222 are referred to.
