Abstract
A removable surface for games tables, comprises a flexible backing the size of the table to which is stuck a cloth. In use the surface is held down on the slate by the weight of the edging or adhesive to provide an easily replaceable surface. The flexible backing should be selected to give a "natural" surface, perhaps high density rubber. Hook-and-loop material may also be used to hold the surface in place. For use with snooker, pool and billiards tables to aid replacing used cloth.
Description
2362328 Improved Table Surface The present invention relates to a surface
for pool tables, billiard tables, snook tables and similar game tables.
er The surface of game tables for ball games are conventionally formed of a heavy slate base on which is stuck a baize cloth such as green baize, blue baize etc. and the properties of this surface such as texture, nap, resilience etc. has an effect on the roll of the balls. It is important that the surface of such tables is correct and conforms to the requirements of the game and is the same or very similar from table to table. The cloth surface is stuck to the slate surface using an adhesive with the cloth pulled to the correct degree of tension before it is stuck down.
In use the cloth will wear and so that it has to be replaced from time to time and to do is this the rim of the table is raised and the slate base lifted, the old cloth removed by ripping it from the base and a new cloth stuck to the slate. The cloth is pulled over the slate base and folded over the edges where it is stuck down. This process of replacing the cloth surface requires the use of specialists in order to get the correct result and the personnel who carry out this job go from location to location to replace the cloth on game tables as required.
This can be very inconvenient for the users and means that they are unable to replace the surface when it needs immediate replacement e.g. when it is ripped.
1 have devised a replaceable cloth surface which is easy to replace.
According to the invention there is provided a cloth surface for a game table on which ball games are to be played which cloth surface comprises a flexible backing the size of the table surface on which is stuck the cloth which forms the cloth surface.
The cloth is the normally used cloth for the table on which it is to be fitted and the cloth is stuck to the backing by means of an adhesive. In conventional tables the edge of the table is hinged and lifts up and the cloth surface of the present invention can be placed over the slate base and the rim lowered so that the cloth surface is held rigidly in place.
The cloth 1 stuck to the backing under controlled conditions so that the right degree of tension is applied to the cloth.
The backing should be sufficiently flexible so that it can be easily handled but have sufficient rigidity that it holds the cloth under tension. The physical characteristics of the support should be such the resilience or "bounce" of the surface is correct, so that the surface behaves and has the feel of conventional surfaces. Of course if different surface characteristics are required then the backing properties can be adjusted accordingly.
The backing can be a high density rubber compound such as a Neoprene rubber or it can be a polymer such as a polyurethane, polyolefin, polyester etc. The important properties of the backing are its physical properties and the backing is chosen accordingly.
The backing and cloth is cut out to fit around the pockets and extra fixing means such as an adhesive can be used to ensure that the backing stays fixed to the slate with no risk of riding up. As the adhesive is used only to hold the backing in position and not to hold the cloth in tension as in existing tables an more easily removed adhesive can be used.
The surface with backing can be held in place by the weight of the edging or it can be held in place by fixing means such as "Velcro" which can be positioned at the edges or in other locations to ensure that the surface can fit tightly.
It is a feature of the invention that the surface can be replaced easily and rapidly by users of the table and this has the advantage that a new cloth is always available.
3 - For some games a different colour cloth is desired and it is an easy matter to change the cloth colour. This enables there to be advertising or other logos on the cloth and the cloth can be changed for specific promotions etc.
Claims (6)
1. A cloth surface for a game table on which ball games are to be played which cloth surface comprises a flexible backing the size of the table surface on which is stuck the cloth which forms the cloth surface
2. A cloth surface as claimed in claim 1 in which the backing is selected to give a surface similar to existing game tables.
3. A cloth surface as claimed in claim 1 in which the backing is a high density rubber compound.
4. A game table for ball games in which the surface comprises a cloth surface as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3.
5. A table as claimed in claim 4 in which the cloth surface is held in place by the weight of the edging.
6. A table as claimed in claim 4 in which there are adhesive means holding the backing to the table.
