Abstract

A support base structure made of corrugated board or the like has upright side walls (1-4) whose junctions define corners of the structure, inwardly folded extensions (9-12) at the bottoms of the side walls being interconnected to form an internal body for supporting a stack of trays or boxes, and the side walls (1-4) extending down below the bottom of the internal body at the said corners to form ground engaging feet (19). A shroud may sit on the base structure to enclose the stack and the feet (19) may have protective plastics shoes.

Description

2362150 "Support base structure" This invention relates to a support base
structure made of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, particularly but not exclusively for carrying a stack of boxes or trays for containing and displaying articles for sale.
According to the invention there is provided a support base structure made of cardboard, corrugated board or simil,r lightweight foldable sheet material, having upright side walls whose junctions define corners of the structure, inwardly folded extensions at the bottoms of the side walls being interconnected to form is an internal body of the structure, and the said side walls extending down below the bottom of the said internal body at the said corners to form ground engaging feet.
The spaces below the bottoms of the side walls, between the said feet, provide access for truck or trolley tines to enable the said structure, and articles thereon, to be lifted and moved about. Preferably the said spaces are provided on all sides of the structure, but to provide them just on two opposite sides would of course be sufficient for the purpose just mentioned, and falls within the scope of the invention.
In a preferred form of the invention inward parts of the said extensions are folded upwardly to form substantially vertical webs of the said internal body, whereby to provide the said body with added strength against vertical compression. Preferably mutually transversely extending ones of said webs are slotted into each other where they cross.
Preferably inwardly folded extensions are provided at the tops of the said side walls, forming a substantially flat top surface of said internal body at least around the edge thereof.
Preferably the said side walls extend up above the top of the said internal body, only at the said corners, to define the corners of a space for receiving an article to be supported.
The said structure may be provided in combination with a shroud made of the same material and dimensioned to sit on the structure and extend up a substantial distance to enshroud a stack of articles to be supported on the structure. Such a shroud may alternatively form an integral part of the structure, by extending at least some of the said side walls up above the said internal body, to define the same.
Structures according to the invention will usually be four-sided, preferably rectangular, but could have any practical number of sides from three upwards.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of corrugated board, for making a support base structure according to a first embodiment of the invention; Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views of a support base structure made from the blank of Figure 1, at two stages of its erection; Figures 4 and 5 are perspective views of the fully erected structure as seen from above and below respectively; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the structure of Figures 1 to 5, in combination with a separate shroud; and Figures 7 and 8 are perspective views of another embodiment of the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, the illustrated blank is made of heavy duty double thickness corrugated board and comprises a row of four hingedly interconnected side wall forming panels 1 to 4 which hingedly carry respective pairs of internal body forming panels 5 to 8 and 9 to 12, and top forming flaps 13 to 16.
Referring now to Figure 2, having formed a foursided wall structure from the blank, the pairs of panels 6/10 and 8/12 are first folded in and up to temporarily out of the way positions, i.e. somewhat higher than their positions as seen in Figure 2. The panels 5 and 7 are then folded in through 900 so as to be horizontal and the panels 9 and 11 are folded up to be vertical. The ends 17 of the panels 9 and 11 are then folded in through 1800 as shown, to enable them to pass through slots 18 in the panels 6 and 8, so that the latter panels can be lowered to horizontal positions, with the panels 10 and 12 now vertical like the panels 9 and 11, and crossing the latter at right angles as permitted by suitable slots in all of the panels 9 to 12. The ends 17 of the panels 9 and 11 are now straightened, to overlie the panels 6 and 8. The structure is now in the condition shown in Figure 3, and erection is completed by folding down the flaps 13 to 16 to reach the fully erected condition of Figures 4 and 5.
Looking now at Figure 4 in particular, it will be seen that the erected support base structure has upright side walls 1 to 4, an internal body formed by the panels 5 to 12 all interlocked together, of which the panels 9 to 12 constitute vertical webs, and a top surface formed by the flaps 13 to 16. At the corners of the structure the side walls extend down below the level of the internal body to form ground engaging feet 19, which are provided with protective plastics shoes 20. Spaces 21 thereby defined between the feet 19 provide access for the tines of a truck or trolley to enable the structure, together with a stack of boxes or trays thereon, to be picked up and moved about. Above the level of the internal body the tops of the side walls define corner members 22 to embrace the bottom corners of the bottom one of such a stack.
Figure 6 shows additionally a separate shroud 23 made of the same material as the support base structure 24 and dimensioned to seat within the corners 22 of the latter and provide added stability for a stack of trays or boxes thereon.
S Referring to Figures 7 and 8, in this embodiment of the invention the side walls 25 of a support base structure as illustrated in Figures 1 to 6 have been integrally extended upwardly to form the walls of an enclosure for a stack of trays or boxes, provided with a removable lid 26 and a removable panel 27 in the front wall. It will'be noted that the top flaps 13 to 16 are necessarily absent from the base structure in this embodiment.

Claims (12)

Claims
1. A support base structure made of cardboard, corrugated board or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, having upright side walls whose junctions define corners of the structure, inwardly folded extensions at the bottoms of the side walls being interconnected to form an internal body of the structure, and the said side walls extending down below the bottom of the said internal body at the said corners to form ground'engaging feet.
2. A structure as claimed in claim 1, wherein inward parts of the said extensions are folded upwardly to form is substantially vertical webs of the said internal body.
3. A structure as claimed in claim 2, wherein mutually transversely extending ones of said webs are slotted into each other where they cross.
4. A structure as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, having inwardly folded extensions at the tops of the said side walls, forming a substantially flat top surface of said internal body at least around the edge thereof.
5. A structure as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the said side walls extend up above the top of the said internal body, only at the said corners, to define the corners of a space for receiving an article to be supported.
6. A structure as claimed in any of the preceding claims, in combination with a shroud made of the same material and dimensioned to sit on the said structure and extend up a substantial distance to enshroud a stack of articles to be supported on the said structure.
7. A structure as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, wherein at least some of the said side walls extend up a substantial distance above the said internal body to define an enclosure for a stack of articles to be supported on the said structure.
8. A structure as claimed in claim 7, wherein a major part of at least one of said side walls, above the said internal body, is made readily removable to expose the articles of such a stack.
9. A structure as claimed in claim 7 or 8, including a lid for said enclosure.
10. Structures as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
