Abstract

The light assembly 10 designed to be fixed to a structure, such as a traffic cone 18 includes a lamp 12 which may be a standard incandescent bulb, a light emitting diode or any other suitable lamp and a fan 14; this may be located below the lamp 12 <WC 1>and is fitted on a spindle (20). Within body 22 of the assembly 10 standard electrical components are provided for transducing rotation of the fan 14 into electrical energy. The assembly 10 may include a rechargeable battery which is recharged by the electrical power generated by the fan 14. At the base of the unit <WC 1>10 there is provided a fixing 16 for fixing the unit 10 to the top of a traffic cone 18. The fan 14 is caused to rotate by natural wind or by air turbulence caused by moving traffic. This fan rotation causes generation of electrical energy within the transducer mechanism which is used to power the lamp 12 and to recharge the rechargeable battery.

Description

2360834 ROAD LAMP The present invention relates to a road lamp, in
particular a lamp used for warning motorists of a road or roadside obstruction.
Road lamps are known for illuminating road and roadside obstructions, including road deviations caused by roadworks and the like. A typical known lamp provides a flashing light and includes a fixing mechanism for fixing the light to a support, which can be a traffic cone, a skip or the like. The lam p must be powered, and this is typically by a battery or a mains electricity power source. These power sources cause well known problems of discharged batteries and difficulty in finding a suitable power supply. An alternative solution provides an oil lamp, with obvious disadvantages of unreliability and are a potential hazard.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved road or roadside lamp.
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a road lamp assembly for indicating road or roadside obstructions including a light emitting unit, a power generator operable to generate electrical power by wind and fixing means for fixing the lamp to a support.
The light emitting unit preferably includes a light bulb, a light emitting diode or other type of lamp. The power generator preferably includes a fan unit coupled to a suitable transducer for converting rotation of the fan into electrical energy.
This assembly in practice makes use of air turbulence or wind caused by moving vehicles. A power storage unit, such as a rechargeable battery, can be provided to power the light during periods of no wind, with the battery advantageously being recharged by the power generator mechanism itself.
2 The fixing means may be of a type suitable for fixing the lamp to the top of a traffic cone and/or to a skip or other support. In an embodiment, the light is provided or formed integrally with a traffic cone.
Advantageously, the lamp includes a control unit for operating the lamp intermittently.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a traffic cone integral with a light. The light is preferably wind powered.
An embodiment of the present invention is described below, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an embodiment of light assembly mounted on a traffic cone;and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the fan of the assembly, taken along line A-A of Figure 1.
Referring to the Figures, the embodiment of light assembly 10 shown is designed to be fixed on top of a traffic cone. It includes a lamp 12 which may be a standard incandescent bulb, a light emitting diode or any other suitable lamp.
A fan 14 is located below the lamp 12 and is of a generally circular cylindrical outer shape. It is fitted on a spindle 20 and includes, within body 22 of the assembly 10, standard electrical components for transducing rotation of the fan 14 into electrical energy. These electrical components will be immediately apparent to the skilled person so are not described in detail herein.
In the preferred embodiment, the assembly 10 includes a rechargeable battery (not shown), located within the body 22 and which is recharged by the electrical power generated by the fan 14.
3 The lamp 12 is coupled to the electricity supply from the fan 14. Where a back up battery is provided, the lamp 12 can be coupled solely to the back up battery, so as to receive its electricity source solely from the battery; or from a combination of the battery and the fan assembly. The constructional details of these alternatives will be immediately apparent to the skilled person.
At the base of the unit 10 there is provided a fixing 16 for fixing the unit 10 to the top of a traffic cone 18, partially shown in dotted outline. The nature of the fixing 16 will be dependent upon the structure and shape of the top of the traffic cone and can be readily determined by the skilled person.
In alternative embodiments, the fixing 16 could be of a type suitable for fixing the unit 10 to another structure, such as the side of a skip, a post or other road side structure.
In this embodiment, the spindle 20 also acts as the support between the base 16 and the body 22. However, alternative supports could be provided. For example, struts could be provided outside the fan perimeter coupled to the housings of the body 20 and the fixing 16. Other alternatives will be apparent.
In use, the fan 14 will be caused to rotate by natural wind or by air turbulence caused by moving traffic. This fan rotation causes generation of electrical energy within the transducer mechanism. This electrical energy is used to power the lamp 12 and to recharge the rechargeable battery.
When no there is no wind causing rotation of the fan 14, the rechargeable battery (when provided) provides the electrical power to the lamp 12.
In the preferred embodiment, the lamp 14 can be made to flash intermittently, by means of simple timing or logic circuitry, also well known in the art.
4 Thus, the unit 10 can provide self-powered light, obviating the problems of prior art devices. The specific design details of the described embodiments provided other advantages which will be apparent to the skilled person.
