Abstract

A locking plate for use with a window or door locking mechanism has an L shaped body 9 which is provided on one limb with two slot shaped openings 14 for receiving a mushroom shaped locking peg, and, on the other limb, with two rectangular shaped openings 16 for receiving deadbolts or security bolts. The L shaped locking plate can be mounted in the corner of a window or door frame. In another embodiment (fig 7) the locking plate is formed as a flat plate with two pairs of opposing slot shaped openings.

2358669 Locking Mechanism for Windows and Doors The invention pertains to
a closing plate according to preamble, patent claim 1 or 11 and to a closing and locking mechanism for windows and/or doors according to preamble, patent claim 16.
Locks or closing and locking mechanisms for windows and doors are known in a wide variety of models. They generally consist of a closing and locking armature provided for on the sash of the window or door that can be actuated by hand and that has several locking pieces or bolts in the area of the sash joint that can be moved by hand between a locked and a released position. For each bolt, there is provided locking opening or bolt opening in a closing plate on the jamb or outer frame, such that the bolt engages into this bolt opening in locking position and is disengaged from the bolt opening in unlocked position.
The bolts are, for example, such bolts that are movable with the closing or locking armature in an axis direction parallel to the closing plate, i. e. pegs, roll pegs or mushroom pegs, for example, or hook-like bolt elements, or also such elements that can be moved perpendicular to the closing plate, for example cleadbolts or security bolts. The bolt openings are not only adapted to the dimensions of the bolts, but also to the type of bolt. Therefore, for the bolts that are moved parallel to the plane of the closing plate, bolt openings are necessary that enable a lateral insertion of the respective bolt when locking, i.e. as a rule bolt openings that are open on at least one side are used here, preferably slotshaped bolt openings, whereas for cleadbolts hole-like bolt openings, i.e.
openings or recesses with a closed edge area are necessary in order to achieve optimal security in locked position.
Closing plates are known that have open bolt openings on both ends of a closing plate body, toward the respective end (DE 299 06 771).
2 Also known (DE 298 00 926) is a closing plate with a single bolt opening provided for in the closing body in such a way that it is suitable for various types of bolts, namely for bolts in the shape of a round or mushroom peg, a flat head 5 peg or a hooked peg.
The object of the present invention is to present a closing plate that provides added security, in particular added security against break-ins when the lock is bolted. The object is attained by embodying a closing plate according to patent claim 1 or 11. A closing and locking mechanism for windows and/or doors is embodied according to patent claim 16.
The closing plate according to the invention enables the use of several types of bolts for one lock at the same time, without increasing the number of closing plates and the time and effort required for mounting.
The closing plate according to the invention has at least two different bolt openings for bolts of two different types that can be used at the same time. By combining several types of bolts, the security of the window or door lock is improved significantly, in particular against break-ins.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the closing plate is designed as an elbow piece with at least two shanks, whereby in a first shank at least one first bolt opening for bolts of a first type and in the second shank at least one bolt opening for bolts of a second type are provided for. This design in particular also has the advantage that due to the elbow-shaped closing plate, which is mounted for example in a corner of the window or door frame joint, the window or door frame is reinforced. Furthermore, the resistance against a forced opening of the sash, i.e. against a break-in attempt, is increased through the reinforcement in two planes. The elbow form also simplifies mounting, since the position of the respective closing plate during mounting is already defined in two planes and the closing plate can be securely mounted with few mounting 3 means in two perpendicular planes, i.e. in particular with increased resistance against forceful removal or against a break-in attempt.
In a further possible embodiment of the invention the closing plate is manufactured with a plate body that has two bolt openings on two opposing sides, respectively, on both sides of a middle plane to which the closing plate is symmetrically formed.
The invention is described in more detail below using sample embodiments in the figures, which depict:
Fig. 1 the window frame and sash of a window of a building, each in the area of a bolting mechanism on two opposite sides of the sash in a first intersecting plane; Fig. 2 in a partial representation similar to Figure 1, the bolting mechanism on one side of the window sash with the closing plate removed; Fig. 3 in a partial representation, the window frame and sash of the window of a building in the area of the locks in a depiction similar to Figure 2, however in a second intersecting plane extending perpendicular to the first; Fig. 4 in top partial view the closing plate of the closing mechanisms of Figures 1 - 3; Fig. 5 a view corresponding to the line A - A of Figure 4; Fig. 6 a view corresponding to the line B - B of Figure 4, Fig. 7 in simplified representation and in top view, a further possible embodiment of a closing plate for use in a locking mechanism with roll pegs or mushroom pegs.
4 For better orientation three perpendicular spatial axes are indicated in Figures 1 - 3, the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis, of which the X-axis and the Z-axis lie in the plane of projection of Figures 1 and 2 and the Y-axis and Z-axis lie in the plane of projection of Figure 3. The X-axis is in these figures, for example, a vertical axis; the Y-axis and Z-axis are in these figures, for example, horizontal axes, of which the Y-axis lies perpendicular to the plane of the opening of the window of the building designated in the figures as 1. This consists in the usual manner of the outer jamb or window frame 2 and the wing 3 with the sash 4 that can be tilted or swung open within the jamb or outer window frame 2.
In the depicted embodiment, the jamb 2 encompasses four jamb profile sections that are at right angles to each other and that enclose the window opening, namely the upper and lower horizontal jamb section 2' and the two vertical jamb profile sections 2", of which only one is depicted in the figure.
The sash 4 also consists in the usual manner of four sash profile sections that are at right angles to each other, namely of the two horizontal sash profile sections 4' (Figures 1 and 2) and the two vertical sash profile sections 4-, of which likewise only one is depicted in the figures (Figure 3).
The usual closing and locking mechanism that can be actuated by a handle is provided for on the sash 4 and is schematically depicted in Figures 1 3 by the connecting rods 5 extending in the direction of the X-axis that can be moved back and forth in this axis by a defined stroke and on which bolts 6 are also provided for that also move with the rods.
In the depicted embodiment these bolts 6 are mushroom pegs or mushroom rods that stand away from the respective connecting rod 5 located in the joint of the sash 4 and are located with their axis perpendicular to the longitudinal side of the connecting rod 5, i.e. in the depicted embodiment in the Y-axis. As Figure 3 shows, the bolts 6 form a cylindrical section 6' extending to the connecting rod 5 and a head section 6---with an enlarged outer diameter on the free end.
In the depicted embodiment, the closing and locking mechanism is designed in such a way that the two connecting rods 5, which for example are provided for on a vertical side of the sash 4 extending in the direction of the X-axis, are moved in opposite directions, for opening the lock, the upper connecting rod 5 in Figure 1 from its upper closed position by the defined stroke downward and the lower connecting rod 5 in this figure from its lower closed position by the defined stroke upward, so that the bolts 6 are moved from their locked position into the unlocked position indicated by broken lines. For locking of the wing 3 the two connecting rods 5 are again moved in opposite directions, however in the other direction. The two bolts 6 are provided for on a side of the sash 4 extending in the direction of the X-axis, i.e. in the depicted embodiment on a vertical side in the area of the joint there.
The closing and locking mechanism on the sash 4 also has so-called deadbolts or security bolts 7. In Figure 1 two such deadbolts 7 are depicted, both in their locking position. The two deadbolts 7 are provided for on a side of the sash 4 extending in the direction of the Y-axis, i.e. in the depicted embodiment on a horizontal side of the jamb in the area of the joint there and are movable for unlocking the wing 3 from the locked position depicted in Figures 1 and 2 in which this deadbolt 7 extends by a defined length beyond the joint of the sash 4 in the direction of the X-axis into an unlocked position, in which the respective deadbolt 7 is moved back into the sash 4 so far that it no longer or only minimally extends beyond the respective joint surface. Also the two deadbolts 7, of which one is located at the upper joint and one at the lower joint in the depiction chosen for Figure 1, are moved in opposite directions when locking and unlocking the wing 3.
The closing and locking mechanism is furthermore designed in such a way that one bolt 6 and one deadbolt 7 are located in the vicinity of a corner 8 of the jamb joint. The distance of the respective deadbolt 7 from the adjacent corner 8 is in the depicted embodiment smaller than the distance of the corresponding bolt 6 from this corner 8.
6 Each bolt 6 therefore forms a "pair of bolts" together with a deadbolt 7. For each pair of bolts a bolt or closing plate 9 is provided for on the jamb frame 2 near the corner 8' of the joint there. This closing plate 9, in the depicted embodiment manufactured by metal injection molding, for example, is essentially of an elbowshaped design, with two shanks 10 and 11. The closing plate 9 is also formed symmetrically to a middle plane M that lies perpendicular to the edge 12 formed between the shanks 10 and 11. The shank 11 in the depicted embodiment is essentially U-shaped, with two outer shank sections 11 ' that are provided for parallel to the middle plane M and parallel to each other and at a distance from one another, with a yoke section 11 " connecting the two shank sections 11'. The yoke section 11 ", which lies perpendicular to the middle plane M, forms the even top of the shank 11 and is plate-like and with a relatively high thickness that is the same as or approximately the same as the thickness of the likewise plate-like shank 10. The shank sections 11 ' on the other hand have a reduced thickness.
Two openings are provided for in the area of the middle plane M in the shank 11 that are designed as elongated holes and are used for mounting the closing plate 9 on the joint of the jamb frame using 2 screws. The openings 13, which lie in the middle plane M with their larger cross-sectional axis, are designed as sink holes on the top of the shank 11.
On the end that is at a distance from shank 10, shank 11 is also provided on both sides of the middle plane M with a slot-shaped bolt opening 14 that is open toward this end and suitable for the bolts 6 designed as mushroom pegs and on the top of the shank 11 have a section 14' of a smaller width and on the bottom side facing the shank sections 11' a section 14" of a larger width, respectively in the direction perpendicular to the middle plane M. The width of the section 14' is equal to or somewhat greater than the diameter of the bolt 6 at its pegshaped section 6'. The width of the section 14" is equal to or greater than the diameter of the bolt 6 at its head section 6". The shank 10 is provided with a 7 mounting opening 15 in the middle plane M that is of a similar design as the openings 13.
On both sides of the middle plane M there, bolt openings 16 in the shank 10 are also provided for that are respectively suitable for a deadbolt 7. The bolt openings 16 are of a rectangular form and adapted to the crosssection of the bolts 7 and located on both sides of the mounting opening 15.
A characteristic feature of the closing plate 9 consists therefore in the fact that several bolt openings 14 and 16 are provided for on this closing plate 9, that these bolt openings are designed to be suitable for different bolts, that the bolt openings 14 or 16 for the different bolts 6 or 7 are provided for on special areas of the closing plate 9, respectively, i.e. on the shanks 10 or 11, and that the closing plate 9 is designed in such a way with respect to these areas that the latter, for a closing plate 9 mounted on the respective corner 8', are located at different sections of the joint of the jamb frame 2 and fastened there, namely in the depicted embodiment the shank 10 on a horizontal section and the shank 11 on a vertical section of the jamb frame joint.
A further characteristic feature of the closing plate 9 consists in the fact that it is symmetrical to the middle plane M, particularly with respect to the bolt openings 14 and 16. This enables the same closing plate 9 to be able to be used on different corners 8' of the jamb frame joint, i.e. corresponding to the area of the corner 8 at the top and bottom of Figure 1.
Figure 7 shows a closing plate 9a in top view that is designed for use with a bolt peg 6, symmetrical to the middle plane M and to a transverse plane 0 intersecting this middle plane perpendicularly. The closing plate 9a consists of a plate-shaped closing plate body 17 made of metal that is slightly rectangular in the depicted embodiment in top view and lies with its longitudinal sides 18 parallel to the middle plane M, but perpendicular to the transverse plane 0. The top and bottom of the plate body 17 are both perpendicular to the middle plane M and perpendicular to the transverse plane Q.
8 The closing plate 9a has four bolt openings 14a that are designed corresponding to the bolt openings 14 and lie parallel to the middle plane M with their longitudinal side. Two bolt openings 14a are provided for on both sides of the transverse plane Q, respectively, that are symmetric both to the middle axis M and to the transverse plane Q with respect to form and location. Each bolt opening 14a is open toward a front side extending perpendicular to the longitudinal side 18. Two mounting openings 19 are provided for in the area of the middle plane M on both sides of the transverse plane Q and at the same distance from this transverse plane and have the form of an elongated hole and lie perpendicular to the transverse plane Q with their longitudinal side.
The distance of the closed ends of the two slot-shaped bolt openings 14a from each other located on each side of the middle plane M on the same axis is considerably smaller in the depicted embodiment than the length of the bolt openings 14a.
The closing plate 9a is used for example on the joint of the jamb frame 2 and especially on the respective jamb profile section 2 " at the point where an additional bolt 6 is provided for between two corners 8 on a closed wing 3.
The invention was described above using sample embodiments. Of course, variations and adaptations of these are possible without abandoning the underlying inventive idea of the invention.

Claims (26)

Patent claims
1. Closing or locking plate for closing and locking mechanism on windows andlor doors, with at least two locking openings (14, 16) provided for on one closing plate body (10, 11), each suitable for one locking piece of the closing or locking mechanism, characterized in that at least one first locking opening (14) is suitable for a locking piece (6) of a first type and at least one second locking opening (16) is suitable for a locking piece of a second type differing from the first type, and that said at least one first locking opening (14) and said at least one second locking opening (16) are provided for in different planes forming an angle to each other, preferably a right angle, on the closing plate body (10, 11).
2. Closing plate according to patent claim 1, characterized in that the body of the closing plate has an elbow or angle form with two shanks (10, 11) and that said at least one first locking opening (14) is provided for in a first shank (11) and said at least one second locking opening (16) a second shank (10).
3. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is suitable for a first locking piece that is movable in an axis direction parallel or approximately parallel to the plane of the first locking opening (14) for locking and unlocking, especially suitable for a first locking piece in the form of a bolt, especially in the form of a peg, mushroom peg or roll peg.
4. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is a slot-shaped bolt opening (14).
5. Closing plate according to claim 4, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is open toward one end of the closing plate (9) 12 or toward one end of a shank (11) of the closing plate possessing this locking opening.
6. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the at least one second locking opening (16) is suitable for a second locking piece that is movable perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to the plane of the second locking opening (16) for locking and unlocking, for example suitable for a bolt, especially for a deadbolt or a security bolt (7).
7. Closing plate according to claim 6, characterized in that the at least one second locking opening (16) is an opening with a closed circumference.
8. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that it has at least two first locking openings (14) andlor at least two second locking openings (16).
9. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that it is symmetrical in design to a symmetry plane (M) with regard to the form and arrangement of the locking openings (14, 16).
10. Closing plate according to claim 9, characterized in that it is symmetrical in design to a central plane (M) that runs perpendicular to an intersecting line of the two planes in which the locking openings (14, 16) are located.
11. Closing plate for closing and locking mechanisms on windows andlor doors with locking openings (14a) provided for on a closing plate body (17) for a locking piece of the closing or locking mechanism, characterized in that two locking openings (14a) are provided for respectively on the two opposing ends of the closing plate body (17), on both sides of a middle plane (M) that encloses a closing plate longitudinal axis and lies perpendicular to the closing plate.
12. Closing plate according to claim 11, characterized in that the locking openings are slot-shaped openings (14a),

14. Closing plate according to claim 11 -13, characterized in that it is symmetrical in design with respect to shape and arrangement of the locking openings (14, 16) to the middle plane (M) andlor to a transverse plane (0) running perpendicular to said middle plane.
15. Closing plate according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the locking openings are bolt openings and the locking pieces are bolts (5, 6).
16. Closing and locking mechanism for windows andlor doors, with at least one closing plate (9) mounted on a window or door joint, preferably mounted on a window-frame joint with at lest two locking openings (14, 16) provided for on one closing plate body (10, 11) that are suitably designed for a locking piece of the closing or locking mechanism, characterized in that the closing and locking mechanism has at least one locking piece (6) of a first type and at least one locking piece (7) of a second type differing from the first type, that at least one first locking opening (14) suitable for the locking piece (6) of the first type and at least one second locking opening (16) suitable for the locking piece of the second type are provided for, and that said at least one first locking opening (14) and said at least one second locking opening (16) are provided for in different planes on the closing plate body (10, 11) forming an angle, preferably a right angle.
17. Closing and locking mechanism according to claim 16, characterized in that the closing plate body has an elbow or angle form, with two shanks (10, 11), that the at least one first locking opening (14) is provided for in the first shank (11) and the at least one second locking opening (16) in 14 the second shank (10), and that the closing plate (9) is mounted in a corner area (8) of the joint.
18. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is suitable for a first locking piece that is movable in an axis direction parallel to or approximately parallel to the plane of the first locking opening (14), especially suitable for a first locking piece in the form of a bolt, a peg, a mushroom peg or a roll peg.
19. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is a slot shaped opening (14).
20. Closing and locking mechanism according to claim 19, characterized in that the at least one first locking opening (14) is open toward one end of the closing plate (9) or toward one end of a shank (11) of the closing plate possessing this bolt opening.
21. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that at least one second locking opening (16) is suitable for a second locking piece that is movable perpendicular or approximately perpendicular to the plane of the second locking opening (16) for locking and unlocking, for example suitable for a bolt, a deadbolt or a security bolt (7).
22. Closing and locking mechanism according to claim 21, characterized in that the at least one second locking opening (16) is an opening with a closed circumference.
23. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that it has at least two first locking openings (14) andlor at least two second locking openings (16).
24. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that it is symmetrical to a symmetry plane (M) with respect to form and arrangement of the locking openings (14, 16).
25. Closing and locking mechanism according to claim 24, characterized in that it is symmetrical in form to a middle plane (M) that runs perpendicular to an intersecting line of the two planes in which the locking openings (14, 16) are located.
26. Closing and locking mechanism according to one of the foregoing claims, characterized in that the locking openings are bolt openings (14, 16) and the locking pieces are bolts (5, 6).
