Abstract

A gift container has a time lock (10) which is so arranged that the container cannot be opened until a predetermined time or date. The setting means is arranged internally so that the preset date or time can only be adjusted before closing the container. The container (2) may have a hinged, preferably spring loaded lid (4) or a removable circular end forming a lid, or may comprise a sleeve housing a drawer.

Description

2358178 1 - "Gift Container" This invention relates to containers, and in
particular, to decorative containers or boxes intended for use as gift containers.
Accordingly to a first feature of the present invention, there is provided a gift container having a time lock which is so arranged that the container cannot be opened until a predetermined time or date.
Preferably, the container is a box having a hinged lid, but it may alternatively comprise any other kind of container, such as a tubular container with at least one removable circular end forming a lid.
In a further alternative construction, the container comprises a rectangular sleeve housing a drawer, the arrangement being such that the drawer can only be opened at the predetermined time or on the predetermined date.
According to a further feature of the invention, there is provided a gift container which is arranged to open automatically at a predetermined time or on a predetermined date. For example, the container may have a hinged lid which is spring loaded so that when the time lock is released, the lid of the box opens automatically.
The container of the invention is particularly suitable for use with gifts which are intended to be made a,,-ailable only on a specific anniversary, such as a birthday, or the first day of the new millenium.
Preferably, the time lock includes an electrical timer circuit, and may be preset before purchase so that once closed it will only open on a predetermined day such as the first day of the new millenium. Alternatively, setting means may be provided for the user to set his own date or time, at which the lock will be released.
According to a further feature of the invention, there is provided a gift box or container having a time lock, with setting means arranged internally of the container, so that the preset date or time of opening can only be adjusted, before the container is closed.
Preferably, the exterior of the container is provided with a time or date display, which is arranged to display a "countdown" to the date or time of opening.
one embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a gift box in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the container comprises a rectangular box 2, having a lid 4 which is hinged to the box at the rear edge 6. The lid ls provided with a conventional type of catch (not shown) which is incorporated into t.he front edge 8 so as to cooperate with a suitable detent in the corresponding edge of the box.
A timer mechanism 10, comprises a digital clock of the well known liquid crystal display type, which is battery operated. As shown, the display is arranged to show a "countdown,' comprising the number of days until the box will open, such as the first day of the millenium. Alternatively, it will be appreciated that it could be arranged to display (for example) a countdown of the number of seconds.
ln the embodiment illustrated, the lid 4 is spring loaded to the open position, so that when the catch is released, the lid will spring open automatically. Alternatively, of course, the arrangement could be such that the catch would simply be retracted to an inoperative position at the preset time, so that the lid could be opened manually.

Claims (10)

1 - A gift container having a time lock which is so arranged that the container cannot be opened until a predetermined time or date.
2. A gift container according to claim 1, comprising a box having a hinged lid.
3. A gift container according to claim 1, comprising a tubular container having at least one removable circular end forming a lid. i 0
4. A gift container according to claim 1, comprising a rectangular sleeve housing a slidable drawer.
5. A gift container according to any one of claims 1 to 4, which is arranged to open 15 automatically at the predetermined time or date.
6. A gift container according to claim 2, having a spring loaded lid which is urged to the open position when the time lock is released.
7. A gift container according to any preceding claim including a presettable timing circuit.
8. A gift container according to claim 7 and including setting means inside the container so that the time or date can only be adjusted before the container is closed. 25
9. A gift container according to any preceding claim which is provided with a time or date display on its exterior.
10. A gift container substantially as herein described with reference to the 30 accompanying drawings.
