Abstract

A carry handle for bags and other articles comprises a hand grip portion 12 on the lower side of which is located a hook formation 14 which is adapted to receive the straps or handles of a bag or the like. The hook may be located so that it is centred and aligned with the centre of gravity of the bag being carried. The hook may feature a protruding portion 16 which is substantially parallel to the lower side of the hand grip. The portion may slope downwards 18 and can be dimensioned such that the handle must be tipped at an angle greater than forty degrees in order to release the bag handles from the device. The handle may be adapted to be attached to a keyring, a belt or a pouch, or may feature formations for opening bottles. The hook and protrusion may be insertable through the gills of one or more fish.

Description

2358127
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Carry Handle.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a device for facilitating the carrying of plastic bags, paper or material bags and the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Plastic bags supplied by supermarkets and other shops for the transport of purchased goods, are very hard on the hands particularly when heavily laden. The plastic straps tend to stretch and the resulting thinner strips of plastic bite into the fmgers causing extreme discomfort.
This problem is exacerbated for the elderly and arthritic persons in particular.
A device is known to the Applicant which comprises a pair of upward facing hooks, one either side of a hand grip, the hooks being adapted to receive the straps of a bag. This device is effective to a degree, but is limited in its applications to the carrying of bags.
It is an object of this invention to provide a bag-carrying device, which is effective, inexpensive, and which finther has a number of alternative applications.
THE INVENTION According to the invention, a carry-handle for bags and other articles comprises a portion adapted to act as a hand grip, the hand grip portion including on the lower side thereof a hook formation adapted to receive the straps or handles of a bag or the like.
In the preferred form of the invention the centre of the hook is located to coincide with the centre of gravity of the loaded bag. Thus when the hook engages the straps of a bag, the centre of gravity of the bag is centred and aligned with that of the load for more comfortable carrying.
Also in the preferred form of the invention, the hook includes at the free end thereof a formation protruding substantially parallel to the lower side of the handgrip. The end of the formation may taper or slope downwards.
This facilitates easy engaging of the straps of the bag and further prevents the straps from slipping out of the hook accidentally; an angle of tip of greater than 40 degrees being required for this to happen. The device of the invention preferably comprises a moulded polymeric material. High-density polyethylene has been found to be particularly suitable.
The carry-handle of the invention may be further adapted to be attachable to a keyring or to include a formation or formations to facilitate opening of bottles and the like.
2 A further option may include a clip for attachment to a belt or as an attachment to a travelling pouch or the like.
It will be appreciated that the size may be altered for different applications and for example, a larger version may be used for carrying fish, the hook and its extension being insertable through the gills of one or more fish.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of the device according to the invention; Figure 2 is a top view of Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views along lines AA and B:B of Figure 1 respectively.
In the drawings, a carry-handle device comprises a high-density polyethylene handgrip 10 having a smoothly rounded portion 12 to facilitate a comfortable grip.
The hand grip portion includes an integral hook 14 therebelow the centre of which (line AA) coincides with the centre of gravity of the load. The free end of the hook includes a substantially horizontal protrusion 16, which has a tapered sloped end 18. This facilitates easy engagement of the handles of a plastic bag.
