Abstract
A cylinder lock 1 for a door is located at least partly in an aperture in a solid protective body 3 mounted within the door. The lock maybe fixed by screws or pins 20 to the protective body and a single fixing may secure the door, the protective body and the lock all together. This fixing may be one of several which form mutually orthogonal sets for securing the protective body to the door (16 and 17, figure 2). The protective body may be made of metal and may include or be attached to a mounting plate 4. Removal of the lock is prevented by the securing pins and the protective body prevents direct interference with the lock.
Description
q 2357795 DOOR AND WINDOW ASSEMBLIES This invention relates to door
assemblies.
In particular the invention is concerned with the mounting in such an assembly of a lock or other mechanism for locking or actuating means for securing the door in a closed position, the lock or mechanism comprising a body containing the operating parts thereof.
Generally the invention has for its object to provide means for protecting such a lock or other mechanism of a door assembly against attack by a wouldbe burglar or thief attempting to break into the building in which the assembly is installed.
The invention has been developed primarily in connection with locks of the kind commonly known as a "Eurocylinder" comprising an elongate body having a part-cylindrical portion containing the operating parts of the lock and a radially projecting portion. When installed in a door such a lock is vulnerable to attack, for example it can easily be broken or knocked out of the door by a chisel or other tool thereby releasingthe door from its locked closed position.
A particular aim of the invention is to provide means for protecting a lock of this kind against such an attack.
In accordance with the invention there is provided means for protecting a lock or other mechanism which is mounted within a part of a door assembly, the said means comprising a solid body which is formed with an aperture through or into which the body of the lock or mechanism extends, the solid body being mounted within said part of the assembly to form a protective barrier around the lock or mechanism.
Preferably the solid body is fixed to the body of the lock or other mechanism so as to secure the latter against being driven out of the said part of the assembly.
The solid body is preferably a metal block.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of a preferred embodiment of a lock-mounting means according to the invention, FIGURE 2 is a horizontal sectional view of part of one form of door assembly having the lock fitted to it, and FIGURE 3 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 of another, similar form of door assembly having the lock fitted to it The drawings show mounting means for a lock 1 of the known kind commonly referred to as a "Euro-cylindee', the lock being intended to be mounted in a door sash which is surrounded by a door outer frame. This lock comprises an elongate body 2 having a cylindrical portion 2a and a laterally 3 projecting portion 2b, the body containing a lock mechanism (not shown) operable by inserting a key into one or other end of the body to turn a locking member (not shown) mounted on the lock for turning about the axis of the portion 2a, between a locking position and a release position. This member is arranged to lock a bolt-actuating mechanism operable to cause bolts (not shown) mounted in the door to engage keepers (not shown) mounted on the door frame thereby to secure the door in its closed position, and to cause the bolts to disengage from the keepers to permit opening of the door. Alternatively the member may be arranged to lock another form of door securing mechanism such as cams, rollers, hooks or any combination of these and bolts. In another form the lock mechanism may be operable by a key from one end only, the other end being provided with a handle or knob turnable to actuate the locking member.
The mounting means for the lock comprises a solid body 3 in the form of a metal block of rectangular shape having a plate 4 attached to it, for example by screws, or formed integrally with it. The body 3 is formed with an aperture shaped to receive with a close sliding fit during assembly the lock body 2 oriented with the laterally extending portion 2b projecting downwardly, the aperture 5 having a cylindrical portion and a downwardly extending portion to receive the portions 2a,2b of the lock body 2, and also an upwardly extending portion to receive the portion 2b if the body 3 is used in an inverted position as 4 may be the case, which enables the mounting means to be fitted to the left or right hand side of a door.
FIGURES 2 and 3 show the lock 1 fitted to a door sash, for example a hinged inwardly or outwardly opening door which may be a residential or french door. The door is mounted in a rectangular outer frame with one side hinged to one of the vertical side members of the outer frame. The door sash comprises a rectangular frame having the lock mounted in one of its vertical side members designated 6 in FIGURES 2 and 3. The side member 6 consists of a plastics extrusion 7 of the cross sectional shape seen in FIGURES 2 and 3 and containing a metal reinforcement 8. The inner face 9 of the extrusion is formed to locate the inner part (not shown) of the door sash surrounded by the frame of the door sash, which may be a pane of glass. The outer face 10 is formed to cooperate with the corresponding vertical side member of the outer frame of the door assembly.
The lock 1 is mounted in the side member 6 so that its ends project from the opposed inner and outer faces 11 and 12 of the member, its locking member (not shown) being arranged to lock a bolt-actuating mechanism 13 (or other form of door securing mechanism) incorporated in the side member 6. This mechanism is operable by two handles (not shown) which are supported by bases 14 fixed respectively to the inner and outer faces 11 and 12 of the side member 6. The member 6 has a recess formed by routing out the extrusion to receive the body 3 of the mounting means with the plate 4 screwed to the member by screws 16.
The body 3 of the mounting means is also secured in position in the side member by screws 17 which extend through bushes 18 and are engaged with complementarily screw threaded holes in the body 3, the sleeves being received in complementary apertures formed in the side member and each having an outwardly extending flange 19 in contact with the adjacent side face of the side member.
The lock body 2 is secured to the body 3 of the mounting means by a pin 20 which extends through a hole in the part 2b of the lock body and has a screw-threaded end engaged with a complementarily screw threaded hole 21 in the body 3. If the body 3 is used in an inverted position the pin 20 is located in hole 22. With this arrangement the body 3 protects the lock against burglars or thieves by preventing the lock body being knocked out of the door by hitting it at one or the other end. The pin 20 acts to secure the lock against longitudinal movement relative to the mounting body 3 which, being of solid metal, can withstand any attempt to damage it as well as being firmly held in the door. The body 3 also provides a solid barrier preventing a chisel or other similar tool being driven into the door frame from the outside, thereby protecting the bolt- actuating mechanism. In particular, the. body 3 protects the assembly against the handle set of the door securing mechanism being removed thus allowing the 6 lock 1 to be manipulated and broken which would permit the said mechanism being released.
