Abstract

A lead-in member sheet retaining structure (1) for connecting to a lead-in member body (9) for towing a length of sheet material through sheet guiding means has a jacket, which comprises two outer cover portions (5, 7). Each cover portion has sheet retaining means (10a, 10b). The cover portions are so connected that the cover portions may be moved relatively apart so as to allow an end of the length of sheet material to be inserted between the retaining means. The sheet retaining means may be magnetised.

Description

2357753 SHEET RETAINING STRUCTURE FOR LEAD-IN MEMBERS This invention
relates to sheet retaining structures for lead-in members.
Lead-in members, known in the art as webbing kites, dollies and leaders, are used in the printing industry to tow paper from a roll of paper through the rollers of a printing press apparatus when the printing apparatus is being set up. The lead-in member is conventionally attached to the paper with adhesive tape, but attempts have been made to secure the free end of paper on the roll to the leadin member by means of magnetised sheets which are attracted to each other and grip an end of the paper which is positioned therebetween. The present invention provides a particularly advantageous way of securing the magnetised sheets to the body of the lead-in member.
According to the invention there is provided a lead-in member sheet retaining structure, adapted to be connected to a lead-in member body for towing a length of sheet material through sheet guiding means, the retaining structure comprising a jacket, which comprises two outer cover portions, each cover portion being provided with a sheet retaining means, the cover portions being so connected that the cover portions may be moved relatively apart so as to allow an end of the length of sheet material to be inserted between the retaining means.
Preferably the outer cover portions substantially enclose the retaining means.
Preferably the outer cover portions are of sheet form.
2 Preferably the retaining means are provided on the inner surfaces of the respective outer cover portions. Preferably at least one of the retaining means comprises a magnetised sheet.
Preferably one outer cover portion is substantially opposite to the other 5 outer cover portion.
It is desirable that the exposed surface of the retaining means ensures a sufficient frictional force with the sheet. Preferably the exposed surfa-. es of the retaining means are abraded.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic cross-section of a retaining structure in accordance with the invention and shown fixed to a lead-in member; Figure 2 is a plan view of the retaining structure shown in Figare 1, and:
Figure 3 is a plan view of the retaining structure and the lead member shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the Figures a retaining structure 1 is shown which is connected to a lead-in member 9.
The retaining structure 1 comprises two retaining sheets 10a and M b.
The retaining sheets 10a and 10b are magnetised sheets of oblorgrectangular shape and are of isotropic rubberised material. The ou er surfaces of each of the sheets 10a and 10b are fixed to cover portion. ' 5 and 7 respectively by adhesive layers (not shown). The cover portion., 5 3 and 7 comprise sheets manufactured from PVC cloth and are so dimensioned that they cover the respective sheets 10a and 10b.
A marginal portion 51 of that part of the sheet 5 which is not fixed to the retaining sheet 10a is heat welded to that part of the sheet 7 which is not fixed to the retaining sheet 10b. The sheet 5 is positioned relative to the sheet 7 so that the retaining member 10a is in register with the retaining member 10b when the members 10a and 10b are, magnetically attracted to each other.
Thus the retaining structure 1 is effectively of a jacket-like construction 10 with the sheet 5 and the sheet 7 enclosing the opposing sheets 10a and 10b.
In use the retaining structure 1 is opened by overcoming the attractive magnetic force and parting the sheets 10a and 10b. An end portion of a roll of paper is positioned between the sheets 10a and 10b so that the paper is gripped thereby. The facing surfaces of the sheets 10a and 10b which are in contact with the paper are abraded so that there is a sufficiently high frictional force to ensure that the paper cannot escape from between the sheets during use. Initially the lead-in member 9 and the connected retaining structure 1 are taken through guide rollers of the printing apparatus by a chain (not shown) which is attached to the narrower end of the lead-in member (See Figure 3).
Once the lead-in member 9 and the retaining structure 1 have reached a required position in the printing apparatus the driven rollers in the apparatus can then be activated, thus conveying the lead-in member and the retaining structure through the printing apparatus. Surfaces 11 and 13 of the sheet 5 and the lead-in member 9 respectively are abraded to 4 ensure that there is a sufficient frictional force between those surfaces and the driven rollers.
Advantageously, the sheets 5 and 7 ensure that the magnetised sheets 10a and 10b are securely connected to the lead-in member as the paper is pulled into the array of guide rollers of the printing apparatus.
It will be appreciated that the sheet 10b may alternatively be fixed to the leadin member 9 and the sheet 5, with sheet 10a attached thereto, could be secured to the lead-in member 9 such that the sheet 10a faces the sheet 10b.
