Abstract
A urinary catheter for intermittent self use by women that comprises a standard catheter to which an attachment is fitted. The attachment consists of a flange to limit the amount of the catheter that can be inserted into the bladder and a thickened segment to allow the catheter to be held. Lubricant covering on the catheter is limited to that portion, from the end to the flange, which is to be inserted into the bladder.
Description
2356816 A,iRINARY CATHETER FOR INTERNMENT USE BY WOMEEN This invention
relates to a catheter for women to perform self catherisation.
A large number of people perform intermittent self catherisation in order to empty their bladders of urine. Catheters currently available for self catherisation are of a standard design which essentially conforms to a tube with a lubricant covering throughout the length of the catheter. The only difference between catheters for use by men or women is in the length of the catheter. The urethra is shorter in women so the length of the catheter is also shorter.
Other than in a shorter length of catheter few previous attempts have been made to design an intermittent self catheter specifically for women.
Problems that women experience with the currently available catheters include:
1. Women are unsure of how much of the catheter to insert into the urethra.
2. The lubricant covering covers the whole of the catheter and hence it is slippery to hold and difficult to manipulate into the urethra.
3. In view of point 2 above it is difficult to maintain a clean insertion of the catheter and prevent the introduction of bacteria leading to urinary tract infection.
According to the present invention there is provided a catheter specifically for intermittent use by women. This comprises a standard short catheter to which an attachment is fitted. The attachment comprises a flange that limits the amount of the catheter that can be inserted into the urethra, followed by a section that can be easily held. Only the portion of the catheter up to the flange has a lubricant covering and is required to be kept clean in the catherisation procedure.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring to the drawings the attachment divides the catheter into 3 parts:
The first segment of the catheter 1 comprises a short segment of blunt ended tubing, just long enough to pass through the urethra and enter the bladder which has a lubricant covering. This segment has side holes through which the urine drains and could manufactured as a straight piece of tubing or curved to facilitate insertion into the bladder. No other part of the catheter has the lubricant covering. This is the only segment that must be kept clean during the catherisation procedure.
This is followed by the attachment that consists of a wide flange 2 that prevents ffirther insertion of the catheter. This flange also marks the end of the portion of the catheter that must be kept clean during the catherisation procedure. Adjacent and continuous with this is a thickened segment 3 with a roughened or ridged surface for easy gripping of the catheter.
The third portion of the catheter 4 is a length of tubing through which the urine can drain into a toilet or appropriate container. The first and third portions of the catheter are continuous through the attachment.
k, 1 CIAlMS 1. A urinaiy catheter for intermittent self use that is fitted with an attachment that comprises of a fi,"ge to limit insextion of the catheter into the bladder and a thickened segraent to allow the catheter to be held- 2. A urinary catheter as claimed in claim 1 with a lubricant covedng limited to that portion of the catheter,'fr'om the end to the flange, which is to be inserted into the bladder.
3. A urinary catheter substantialky as herein described and illustrated in the.
accompanying drawings.
