Abstract

A tipping trailer has a body 1 which tilts relative to the chassis 14 by means of inflating an airbag 8 between the chassis 14 and body 1 with the exhaust gasses of the host vehicle by use of a connector 4 attached to the exhaust pipe 11. The body 1 is releasably secured at the front end by means of a catch 10 and hinged at the rear by means of a pivotable attachment 2. The lifting airbag is contained in a split chamber 9 which has an air hose 3 passing through the split chamber 9 into the airbag 8. The hose 3 runs from the airbag to the front of the trailer and is interrupted with a one way valve 5 and has a rubber connector 4 to allow it to attach to the exhaust pipe 11 of the host vehicle as the exhaust gasses pass into the lifting airbag 8. The body 1 is raised relative to the chassis 14. By opening the one way valve 5, the pressure is released from the lifting bag 8 therefore lowering the body 1 relative to the chassis 14.

Description

2355247 1 - --,,)ping trailer The invention relates to a Tipping Trailer
Tipping trailers are well known and widely used for a variety of tasks in particular the movement of earth, sand, gravel and other loose materials. To tip these materials from a trailer usually involves the use of an hydraulic ram fitted to the trailer with either an electric or hand powered pump or hydraulic servo power from a slave vehicle, hydraulic systems and their power source are relatively expensive and complicated other means include a scissor jack method, this however requires a certain amount of physical effort on the part of operator.
The object of this invention is to provide a tipping trailer that uses the exhaust gases of the towing vehicle to raise the body of the trailer by inflating an airbag between the chassis and body of the trailer and therefore does not use any of the complicated hydraulics of a conventional tipper trailer Accordingly the invention provides a box tipper trailer comprising a wheeled chassis a body in the form of a box, means for releasably securing the body onto the chassis at the front end, a pivotable hinge mechanism at the rear end allowing the body to tilt at one end relative to the chassis, the body having a hinged flap at the rear to allow the contents of the box to escape when tilted, the body and chassis move relative to each other by means of inflating an airbag that is permanently positioned in a split chamber between the body and chassis, inflation is achieved by means of a hose which is attached permanently at one end to the airbag and at the other manually when needed to the exhaust pipe of the towing car or van by a rubber cone device, exhaust gasses then pass through a one way valve into the airbag causing inflation which then lifts the body relative to the chassis to deflate the airbag and therefore lower the body pressure is released through the one way valve.
2.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - Fig 1. Shows a perspective of trailer with box in position on chassis Fig 2. Shows a see through view of trailer with position of lifting airbag chamber and air hose in relation to chassis and body when in closed position Fig 3. Shows a perspective of trailer with box in raised position relative to chassis Fig.4 Shows a plan view of trailer with box and chassis in closed position Fig 5. Shows a plan view of trailer with box and chassis in raised position 3.
Referring to the drawings, the trailer comprises wheeled chassis 14 and a body in the form of a box releasably secured at the front by means of a bolt or catch 10 and attached at the rear by means of a hinge/pivot device 2 or similar means.
In order to raise the body from the chassis section the means of securing the body to the chassis are removed and hose 3 and rubber cone 4 are attached to the exhaust pipe I I of the host vehicle. As the engine idles exhaust gasses are forced into the lifting bag 6 through a one way valve 5 at a pressure of approximately.6 bar when the lifting bag is fully inflated 8 the cone 4 is taken off the exhaust 11 the one way valve preventing any release of the gas from the lifting bag 8. To lower the body the pressure in the lifting bag 8 is released through the one way valve 5 4. -.aims 1) A box tipper trailer comprising a wheeled chassis a body in the form of a box, means for releasably securing the body onto the chassis at the front end, a pivotable hinge mechanism at the rear end allowing the body to tilt at one end relative to the chassis, the body having a hinged flap at the rear to allow the contents of the box to escape when tilted, the body and chassis move relative to each other by means of inflating an airbag that is permanently positioned in a split chamber between the body and chassis, inflation is achieved by means of a hose which is attached permanently at one end to the airbag and at the other manually when needed to the exhaust pipe of the towing car or van by a rubber cone device, exhaust gasses then pass through a one way valve into the airbag causing inflation which then lifts the body relative to the chassis, to deflate the airbag and therefore lower the body, pressure is released through the one way valve.
2) A tipping trailer as claimed in claim I having a front end and an off loading end the platform being mounted on the chassis by means of a main pivotal attachment and being tiltable with respect to the chassis about the pivotable attachment.
3) A trailer as claimed in claims I and 2 with a lifting airbag positioned between the chassis and load carrying platform.
4) A trailer as claimed in claims 1, 2 and 3 with a lifting airbag fixed into a split chamber which acts as a housing to protect the lifting airbag when in transit.
5) A trailer as claimed in claims 1,2,3 & 4 where the exhaust gasses of the towing vehicle are used to inflate the lifting airbag and therefore raise the load carrying platform relative to the chassis.
