Abstract

235,391. Ellis, W. J. June 17, 1924. Embossing-surfaces.-Dies for embossed printing are produced by providing both sides of a sheet of paper with registering impressions, coating the impressions with powdered resinous or other self-hardening material, and then heating to cause the resin to swell up and harden. Several such sheets may be superposed to obtain the desired elevation of design, and a female die to co-operate therewith is provided by impressing the die into a soft or pliable substance placed or coated on a block which will harden after receiving the impression. An imprint of the type &c. is first made, as indicated at 11<1>, Fig. 3, on the bed 11 of a press which carries the usual gauges, so that an imprint on the upper face of a sheet of paper laid on the bed against the gauges will register exactly with that on the bed below the sheet. The imprint on the bed is transferred to the lower face of the sheet at the same time as the upper face is printed. Dusting of the impressions with resin, and then heating, results in a sheet 10 with raised designs 14, 15 on each side, as shown in Fig. 8. The complete die, shown in Fig. 9, comprises three of these sheets 16, 17, 18, with their raised parts 19, 20 superposed.
