Abstract

A box made from a blank (fig.3) comprises a top part 10 and a bottom part 11, which may be hinged together by side wall 18, one part being receivable in the other to close the box. The box has an even number of side walls numbering six or more. First alternate side walls (14, 16, 20, 23, 25, 28) on the top and bottom box parts have wing portions (eg. fig.3, 35) which are trapped between a side flap (eg. fig.3, 30) and an extension flap (eg. fig.3, 32) of second alternate side walls (15, 17, 19, 21; 24,26,27,29) to connect the side walls together, forming the erected box. Ventilation openings may be formed on the box comprising apertures 36 and recesses 37. Also disclosed is a flat plan of a blank (fig.3) from which the box may be formed.

Description

2350104 -1IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO BOXES This invention relates to a
box formed from a blank and to a blank for making such a box.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a box made from a blank, the box having n sides, where n is an even number and is equal to or greater than six, the box comprising a bottom part and a top part, one part being receivable in the other part, first alternate sides of at least one of the top and bottom parts comprising a side flap attached to a top or bottom panel of the box and an extension flap folded against the side flap and second alternate sides of said at least one of the top and bottom parts having wing portions which extend from opposite side edges of each second alternate side and which are trapped between the side flap and extension flap of two adjacent first sides to connect the sides of said at least one of the top and bottom parts together.
Preferably, the extension flaps fit in slots fornied at or adjacent to a fold line between the top or bottom panel of the box and respective side flaps to hold the extension flaps against respective side flaps.
Preferably, the top and bottom parts of the box are formed in substantially the same manner.
Preferably, ventilatiomopenings are formed in the box. In this case, the -2ventilation openings may be fonned by apertures in the one part, typically the top part, of the box and recesses in the other part of the box.
Preferably, the box has eight sides. 5 Conveniently, the top and bottom parts of the box are hingedly connected together.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a blank for making a box according to the first aspect of the invention, the blank comprising a top or bottom wall panel of the box, first side wall panels and second side wall panels alternating with the first side wall panels where the number of side wall panels is n and where n is an even number and is equal to or greater than six, each first side wall panel comprising a side flap attached to the top or bottom wall panel by a first fold line and an extension flap attached to a respective side flap by a second fold line and the second side wall panels having wing portions which extend from opposite side edges of each second side wall panel so that they can be trapped between the side flap and the extension flap of two adjacent first side wall panels when the blank is assembled into a box. 20 The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a box according to the first aspect of the invention, in a closed condition.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the box shown in Figure 1 in an open condition, and Figure 3 is a plan view of one embodiment of a blank according to the second aspect of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the box and blank comprise a top part 10 and a bottom part 11 which is hingedly connected to the top part 10 about a fold line 12 and which fits within the top part 10.
The box is octagonal in shape, the bottom part comprising a bottom wall panel 13 and eight side wall panels 14 to 21 inclusive and the top part comprising a top wall panel 22 and seven side wall panels 23 to 29 inclusive.
The side wall panels 15, 17, 19 and 21 of the bottom part 11 and the side wall panels 24, 26, 27 and 29 of the top part 10 comprise a side flap 30 (see Figure 3) attached to a top or bottom wall panel 22, 13 of the box by a fold line 31 and an extension flap 32 attached to the side flap 30 by a fold line 32. The extension flap 32 can be folded against the side flap 30 and held in position by inserting a wedge shaped free end of the extension flap 32 in a slot 33 in the top wall panel 22 or the bottom wall panel 13 adjacent to the fold line 31.
The side wall panels 14, 16, 18 and 20 of the bottom part 11 and the side wall panels 23, 25 and 28 of the top part 10 each have winged portions 34 and 35 (see in particular Figure 3) which extend from opposite side edges of each of these panels and which are trapped between the side flap 30 and the extension flap 32 of two adjacent side wall panels to connect the side wall panels of the top and bottom parts 10 and 11 together.
Ventilation openings are formed in the box. These ventilation openings are preferably formed by apertures 36 in the upper portion of the side wall panels 18 and 23 and recesses 37 in the upper portion of the side wall panel 14.
The box is typically formed of cardboard and is ideally suited for the transportation of pizzas. It can be assembled without the need for gluing and is stackable without crushing.
The box as described is of octagonal shape, but it can be of other shapes provided that it has an even number of sides equal to or greater than six.
The box as described above has top and bottom parts which are hingedly connected together. However, the top and bottom parts could be separate from one another.
A box made from a blank, the box having n sides, where n is an even number and is equal to or greater than six, the box comprising a bottom part and a top part, one part being receivable in theother part, first alternate sides of at least one of the top and bottom parts comprising a side flap attached to a top or bottom panel of the box and an extension flap folded against the side flap and second alternate sides of said at least one of the top and bottom parts having wing portions which extend from opposite side edges of each second alternate side and which are trapped between the side flap and extension flap of two adjacent first sides to connect the sides of said at least one of the top and bottom parts together.
2. A box as claimed in claim 1, wherein the extension flaps fit in slots formed at or adjacent to a fold line between the top or bottom panel of the box and respective side flaps to hold the extension flaps against the respective side flaps.
3. A box as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the top and bottom parts of the box are formed in substantially the same manner.
4. A box as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein ventilation openings are formed in the box.
5. A box as claimed in claim 4, wherein the ventilation openings are formed by apertures in the one part of the box and recesses in the other part of the box.
-6 6. A box as claimed in any one of the preceding claims having eight sides.
7. A box as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the top and bottom parts of the box are hingedly connected together.
8. A box made from a blank substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
9. A blank for making a box as claimed in claim 1, the blank comprising a top or bottom wall panel of the box, first side wall panels and second side wall panels alternating with the first side wall panels where the number of side wall panels is n and where n is an even number and is equal to or greater than six, each first side wall panel comprising a side flap attached to the top or bottom wall panel by a first fold line and an extension flap attached to a respective side flap by a second fold line and the second side wall panels having wing portions which extend from opposite side edges of each second side wall panel so that they can be trapped between the side flap and the extension flap of two adjacent first side wall panels when the blank is assembled into a box.
10. A blank for making a box substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawing.
