Determining distances acoustically. - Relates to apparatus for timing short intervals and particularly tc apparatus of the kind described in Specification 164,011, [Class 139, Watches &c.], when used for timing echoes in acoustic depth-sounding, a disc 7 being released for rotation when a sound is emitted while a brake 6 is applied to the disc on arrival. Accord. ing to the present invention several microphones 1 - - 4, are arranged in series and act jointly to operate the brake. This arrangement ensures quick response to feeble sounds, diminishes the effect of individual fluctuations in the microphones, and provides against failure of a microphone through fracture or the like. For detecting the echo three or more microphones are assembled in a common casing, but for detecting the initial sound microphones are spaced along the ship to allow for variations in the latter's speed. Microphones may be arranged in different planes on the ship's hull for measuring lateral distances as well as depths, and they may be put out of action for the initial sound or screened therefrom by the ship's hull. According to the Provisional Specification a similar arrangement may be used for detecting subaqueous signals.
